Title: Cryobiology

1
Cryobiology
  • The Freezing Process

2
Salary of a Cryobiologist
  • Most Cryobiologist work 8 hours a day, five days
    a week
  • Cryobiologist conducting independent research may
    set their own hours.
  • Depending on your degree your salary may range
    from 29 500- 42 000.
  • Most salaried cryobiologists receive health and
life insurance, paid sick, holiday, and vacation
    days, and
  • receive retirement benefits
  • Most cryobiologists who conduct independent
research depend on grants and other sources of
funding and usually provide their own benefits.

3
Education Required
  • Recommended High School courses are Biology,
Chemistry, and Physics. As well as Algebra,
Geometry and Trigonometry. English and college
    prep. Classes are also recommended.
  • Generrally speaking, Students do not major in
cryobiology during the undergrad years because it
    is a special field.
  • A Masters or doctoral degree is usually required
    for independant research.
  • A masters degree requires about two years of
course work and seminars in cryobiology, and
completion of an original laboratory research
    project.
  • Study for a doctoral degree includes research and
laboratory work leading to new scientific
findings presented in a formal written thesis.
  • It takes from four to six years to earn a Ph.D.

4
Duties of a Cryobiologists
  • The hands on scientists job is to experiment with
    people and animals.
  • Cryonics is a myth at this point freezing humans
    without killing them is impossible
  • Most Cryobiologists study these 6 major areas
  • Study of cold-adaptation of micro-organisms,
    plants, animals
  • Cryopreservation of cells, tissues, gametes and
embryos of animal and human origin for purposes
    of long-term storage
  • Preservation of organs under hypothermic
    conditions for transplantation
  • Lyophilisation of pharmaceuticals
  • Cryosurgery, a (minimally) invasive approach for
the destruction of unhealthy tissue using
    cryogenic gases/fluids.
  • Physics of supercooling, ice nucleation/growth
and mechanical engineering aspects of heat
    transfer during cooling and warming.

5
Relation to Biotechnology
  • Biotechnology Lifetechnology,
  • Cryobiology Freezing Life
  • Freezing is the technology and Life.
  • The type and specifics of biotechnology is
    freezing of organisms

6
Info about the field
  • I couldnt find any information about the recent
discoveries in the field of cryobiology.
  • Unless you are an independent researcher you
would be working mostly with other Cryobiologists
but also several engineers and a few supervisors.

7
The technology
  • This is a russells tech freezer.

8
Specific studies in cryobiology
  • Cryobiology the study of life at
    low temperatures.
  • Cryogenics is the branch of physics and engineeri
ng that studies the production and use of very
low temperatures. Cryogenics is not cryonics,
    although people often confuse them.
  • Cryonics is the low temperature preservation of
humans and mammals with the intention of future
revival. Cryonics is not part of mainstream
cryobiology. Cryonics still depends heavily on
speculative future technology which may or may
    not be invented.
  • Cryopreservation is a technology whereby cells,
whole tissues, or embryos are preserved by
cooling to temperatures below the freezing point
    of water.

9
TV history
  • Cryobiology has a lot of history on TV.
  • Its most known appearance is probably on the show
Futurama but it also appeared in an Austin Powers
movie and a villain in batman lives in a
    cryogenic freezer. (Mr. Freeze)

10
Interesting facts
  • It is a known fact that famous baseball player
Ted Williams and his son John-Henry were frozen
    after their deaths.
  • Cryobiology could become obsolete before it is
even possible to freeze humans. With the
development of healing people with embryos and
    adult stem cells.
