What is it?
  • Herpes virus that infects B Cells and Epithelial
    cells- linked to malignancies in both
  • Responsible for Infectious Mononucleosis
  • 2nd most common

  • Named after M. Anthony Epstein and Yvonne Barr in
    1961
  • Humans are the only known reservoir

Transmission
  • Saliva
  • Blood transfusions
  • Infects 95 of the worlds population
  • 90 of US population infected by age 25

  • Sore throat
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Weight Loss

  • Hemolysis

  • Occurs earlier in females than males
