    fleet.
  • Destroyers - air defence
  • Frigates - surface and subsurface warfare.
  • They are equally at home in large task groups or

Aircraft carriers
  • Aircraft carriers are the largest ships in the
    fleet.
  • They are very versatile, and can be used for
    various different purposes on expedition
    operations.
  • Their main armament is provided by their aircraft
they carry, which enables carriers to deploy
rapidly around the world to local points of
    crises.

12
What is the purpose of the Ski Jump at the front
of aircraft carriers?
  • The ski jump is an ingenious British invention.
  • It is used by fixed wing aircraft, such as the
harrier, to take off in short distances.
  • It helps the aircraft take off by giving it a
"push" in an upward direction at the moment of
    launch.

LPDs
  • The Albion Class, Landing Platform Dock Ships
(LPD's) primary function is to embark, transport,
and deploy and recover (by air and sea) troops
and their equipment, vehicles and miscellaneous
cargo, forming part of an Amphibious Assault
    Force.

Test!
  • Dont forget
  • Destroyers have a D pennant number
  • Frigates have a F pennant number
  • Type 23 Frigates are different to type 22s
because of the hull line being continuous.
  • Type 42 Destroyers batch 3 are different to batch
1 and 2 because of the reinforced hull line near
    the middle.
  • You can also tell Destroyers by their radar
    domes.
  • Aircraft carriers are different to the assault
ship (Ocean) because of the ski jump.
  • LPDs have a section at the back for landing on
