Title: Hyena

1
Hyena
  • I chose the hyena because it can eat a lion.
  • The females are bigger than males.
  • Female hyenas get to be the boss, and tell the
    males what to do.
  • Babies play tug of war with sticks and bones.

2
Physical Description
  • The hyena looks like a dog.
  • The hyena is 28 to 35 inches tall, and they
    weigh 90 to 190 pounds.
  • Hyenas have manes on their neck and back.
  • There are three types of hyenas with different
patterns on their fur. One has spots of brown
and black, another has strips of brown and
black, and the final type is brown with a gray
    head.

3
Habitat
  • The hyena lives in Africa, south of the Sahara
    Desert.
  • They live in grasslands and woodlands.
  • Hyena babies live in holes in the ground called
    dens.
  • Hyenas live in groups called packs.

4
Diet
  • They are carnivores.
  • Sometimes they eat garbage.
  • Hyenas use their sense of smell to get their
    food.
  • They hunt in packs.
  • The hyena eats most of the animal parts, but not
    their hair.
  • They are nocturnal and they need very little
    water.
  • The hyena has powerful jaws and digestive system
and so it can eat bones and skin.

5
Babies
  • The hyena has two to four babies called cubs.
  • Cubs have most of their teeth when they are born.
  • Cubs start eating meat when they are 5 months
    old.
  • The babies drink milk from mother until they are
    18 months.
  • They start to hunt and scavenge when they are 1
    year old.
  • The pack stays close to the cubs den to guard
    them.
