Title: BETTA FISH

1
BETTA FISH
  • BY BUREN COATS, JOEY BOWLER, AND MICHAEL
    KAUFFMANN

2
OBJECTIVE
  • To test the aggressiveness of the fish under two
    conditions
  • 1.) Different water temperature
  • 2.) Previously exposing fish to each other VS not
previously exposing fish to each other

3
PROCEDURE (water temperature)
  • 1.) Fill bowl with cool water
  • 2.) Add 2 fish (Dr. Bill VS Guiseppe)
  • 3.) Observe behavior
  • 4.) Fill another bowl with warm water
  • 5.) Add 2 fish (Poncho VS Guido)
  • 6.) Observe behavior
  • 7.) Compare and contrast

4
HYPOTHESIS
  • Since Bettas are tropical fish, they are
accustomed to warm water. They will be more
aggressive in warm water because it is a familiar
environment. They will be less aggressive in cool
water because they will be reluctant in an
unfamiliar environment and less able to function.

5
RESULTS (cold water)
  • Dr. Bill raised fins, approached Guiseppe at 45
    seconds, but did not strike
  • 4 minutes - first strike by Dr. Bill
  • 5 minutes - Guiseppe attacked back
  • 5-14 minutes Random attacks, majority by Dr.
    Bill
  • 14 min-fish took a break-tired
  • 30 min-Dr. Bill winner by judge decision

6
RESULTS (warm water)
  • -8 min - Guido's cheek fins opened
  • -18 minutes - first strike by Guido
  • -18 23 Poncho attempts to avoid Guido
  • -23 minutes - Guido attacks again
  • -Guido winner by judge decision

7
OBSERVATION
  • The fish are more aggressive in warm water. It
took them half the time of the fish in cool water
to attack each other. The fish in cool water
attacked each other very little, while the fish
    in warm water attacked often.

8
PROCEDURE 2 (exposing fish to each other VS not
exposing)
  • 1.) Set 2 fish next to each other for 10 minutes
  • 2.) Put them in the bowl
  • 3.) Observe
  • 4.) Keep 2 fish in separate non-transparent bags
  • 5.) Put them in the bowl
  • 6.) Observe

9
HYPOTHESIS
  • The fish who are able to see each other before
being put in the bowl will be more aggressive
than the fish who do not see each other before
    being put in the bowl.
  • The fish who are able to see each other will
become angry and anxious. The fish in
non-transparent bags will not because they cannot
    see each other.

10
RESULTS (fish exposed to each other)
  • 45 seconds first attack by Dr. Bill
  • 4 minutes Dr. Bill attacks
  • 6 minutes Guiseppe attacks
  • 7 30 random, often attacks
  • 30 minutes Dr. Bill wins by unanimous decision

11
RESULTS (fish not exposed to each other)
  • 8 Minutes Guido attacks
  • 13 minutes Guido attacks
  • 13 30 no attacks, Poncho avoids Guido
  • 30 minutes Guido wins by unanimous decision

12
OBSERVATION
  • Fish that are exposed to each other before being
put together are more aggressive than fish who
are not exposed to each other before being put
    together.

FINAL CONCLUSION
  • Although water temperature seemed to be an
initial factor, we realized after the third
sequence between Dr. Bill and Guido (warm water)
that water temperature was irrelevant because of
the limited amount of time the fish were exposed
    to the warm/cold water
  • The fishs pre-exposition to one another was the
determining factor in the aggressive nature of
    the fish

17
EXTRA
  • No fish were killed during this experiment. The
intent of this experiment was to further our
knowledge of Betta fish, not to be inhumane. We
    love animals.
