1
Broad Brook School Playground Proposal
2
School Health Index for Elementary School
  • Winter 2006-Committee completed Needs Assessment
for School Health and Safety Policies and
Environment as part of planning for the Board of
    Education Wellness policy.
  • Using data from the needs assessment, committee
    identified building strengths and weaknesses.

3
Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Written policies
  • Restricted access to food of low/minimal
    nutritional value
  • Air quality and pest control practices
  • Prohibit and enforce no tobacco use policies
  • Safe physical environment and its maintenance
  • Enrichment experiences
  • PD on asthma
  • Representative on school health committee

4
Recommended Actions
  • Develop a long term plan to upgrade playground
area behind the school with equipment and
materials that meet current playground safety
    standards.
  • Investigate additional funding resources to
    upgrade playgrounds.
  • Budget for cushioning materials annually.

5
Playground Planning Committee
  • Mission To design a playground facility,
    appropriate to the developmental/physical needs
of children between the ages of 5 and 12 years.
To upgrade playground facilities to current
    safety standards.
  • Committee members
  • Elissa Podd
  • Laurie Sassi
  • Marion Rolocut
  • Midge Pych
  • Jeanne McCarroll

6
Broad Brook School Wins
  • May 2006 5,000 in Lets Just Play giveaway.
  • Mrs. Stanley wins a Playweb from Play World.
  • Town of East Windsor to excavate for
    installation.
  • Donation of certified Playground Mulch.

7
Placement of Equipment
  • The Rockblocks could be placed in the lower
southern corner of the playground, between the
    blacktop and the swings.

8
Placement of equipment
  • The Playweb could be placed on the upper northern
section of the playground. This is more than 30
feet of clearance from any existing structure or
    the blacktop.

9
Principals Perspective
  • North Street School
  • Windsor Locks
  • I have more problems with the older equipment.
One student injured his face after walking into
    one of the metal posts.
  • Orchard Hill School
  • South Windsor
  • 84 inch Rock Wall was installed this summer by
our PTO. There have been no incidents of
children being injured. We did have a child fall
off the monkey bars and break her wrist.
  • The students love the Rock Wall, and the
public has access to the playground on the
    weekends.
