Characteristics
  • Habitat of one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros
    sondaicus).
  • Vast biodiversity of flora and fauna.
  • World heritage site (inscribed in 1992).

6
Other characteristics
  • Ujung Kulon National Park covers an area of
approximately 120,551 ha. Such as 76,214 ha of
land and 44,337 ha of marine.
  • Approximately 40 of this territory is marine.
  • Mangrove, mudflats, sea grass, sea weeds and
coral reefs are among important ecosystems in the
    National Park.

7
Marine Programs
  • Law enforcement / protection
  • Studies and research
  • Monitoring
  • Sustainable use of resources
  • Community participation (including co-management
    schemes)

8
Law enforcement / protection
  • Establishment of Marine patrol units to protect
marine territory and to prevent illegal entrance
    to the Park
  • 5 patrol units operating around the peninsula
  • Record violations and fauna observation

Studies and Research
  • Turtle nesting. Hatchery for turtle eggs laid on
the south coast of Ujung Kulon.
  • Heart cockle (Anadara sp). Study on the
distribution and growth of clams living on the
mudflat in Ujung Kulon National Park.
  • Soft coral farming (underway). Research for
possible rehabilitation methods as well as
    marketing potential of soft corals.

12
Monitoring
  • Coral reef monitoring in 15 locations in the park
    (30 line intercept transects).
  • Reef fishes monitoring in 15 locations (30 belt
    transects).
  • Sea weed monitoring (south coast) using point
    intercept transect.

Sustainable Use of Resources
  • Sea weed in traditional utilization zone (south
    coast).
  • Sea weed farming.
  • Use of artificial reef (in progress).

16
Community Participation
  • Community involvement in marine patrol units.
Community members become crew of the patrol
    units.
  • Community patrol in relevance with traditional
sea weed utilization in south coast. Local
people are involved in managing and preserving
    the traditional utilization zone.
  • Community involvement in coral farming and
    transplantation activities. Local people will
eventually be involved in the rehabilitation of
nearby coral reef in return of the economic
    benefit of coral farming.

17
Conclusions
  • Rich biodiversity in Ujung Kulon national park
    offers tremendous opportunities for studies,
research, and also for the well being of the
    people.
  • Marine biodiversity is protected to preserve its
potentials. Efforts can include local people as
    an active key component.
  • Preservation of marine resources and potentials
will eventually support the integrated efforts
    for biodiversity and endangered species
    conservation.
