SHOULD NOT BE DONE IN MOPP-4

5
STANDARDS
  • THE SQUAD/SECTION USE THE CORRECT SYMBOLS TO
PREPARE AND SUBMIT AN OVERLAY IDENTIFYING ALL
    OBSTACLES, OBSTRUCTIONS, TERRAING FEATURES,
    CRITICAL MEASURMENTS, DIMENSIONS AND
CLASSIFICATIONS ARE ACCURATE WITHIN PLUS OR MINUS
10 PERCENT. THE SQUAD COMPLETES THE ECONNAISSANCE
NLT THE TIME SPECIFIED IN THE OPORD

6
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • THE SQUAD LEADER PLANS THE ROUTE RECON
  • a) PERFORMS A MAP ORIENTATION TO ID THE
  • ROUTE AND START/STOP POINTS
  • b) ESTABLISHES THE RECON OBJECTIVES
  • (OBSTACLE LOCATION, TRAFFICABILITY
  • AND WATER POINTS).
  • c) REQUESTS A SECURITY TEAM TO SUPPORT
  • THE RECON IN THE EVENT OF ENEMY
    CONTACT
  • (2 PERSONELL PER SQUAD)
  • d) PLANS FOR A DOUBLE FLOW OF TRACKED
    VEHICLES
  • (UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED BY THE
    COMMANDER).

7
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • THE LEADER PREPARES AN OVERLAY OF THE SPECIFIED
    ROUTE
  • a) DRAWS THE ROUTE TO SCALE ON TH OVERLAY.
    SHOWS THE
  • LIMIT OF SECTOR SYMBOLS (ONE EACH AT
    THE START AND
  • END POINTS).
  • b) PLOTS AT LEAST 2 GRID REFERENCE POINTS
    AND A GRID OR
  • MAGNETIC NORTH ARROW.
  • c) PREPARES THE TITLE BLCK. AS A MINIMUM,
    INCLUDES NAME,
  • SSN, UNIT, MAP SHEET, SERIES, SCALE
    AND ANY REMARKS

8
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • LEADER BRIEFS THE TEAM ON THE MISSION USING
    5-PARAGRAPH FORMAT
  • a) ROUTE TO RECONNOITER
  • b) RECON METHOD (HASTY OR DELIBERATE)
  • c) RECON OBJECTIVES
  • d) TIME AND DISTANCE FACTORS
  • e) NOISE AND LIGHT DISCIPLINE
  • f) RADIO COMMUNICATIONS (PROGRESS REPORTS,
    ASSISTANCE,
  • COMMO CHECKS)
  • g) ACTIONS THE SECURITY TEAM TAKES AT HALTS
    AND UPON
  • ENEMY CONTACT.

9
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • LEADER INSPECTS
  • a) COMPASSES AND TAPE MEASURES
  • b) REQUIRED DA FORMS, (1248, 1249,
    1251,1252,AND 1711R)
  • c) WEAPONS, LBE, MASKS, CANTEENS, AMMO
  • d) RADIO (SECURE MODE AND COMMO CHECK)

10
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • THE TEAM RECONS THE ROUTE TAKING REQUIRED
MEASUREMENTS AND RECORDING INFO ALONG THE ROUTE
  • a) IDENTIFIES THE TRAVELED WAY WIDTH ALONG
    THE
  • ROUTE
  • 1. SINGLE FLOW 5.5M TO 7.3M WHEEL, 6M
    TO 8M TRACK
  • 2. DOUBLE FLOW AT LEAST 7.3M WHEEL, 8M
    TRACK
  • 3. IN THE ABSENCE OF GUIDANCE, RECONS
    FOR DOUBLE
  • FLOW TRACK TRAFFIC.

11
QUESTION
Q WHAT DETERMINES THE TRAVELED WAY WIDTH
A THE NARROWEST POINT ON THE ROUTE
12
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • SQUAD RECONNOITERS CONT
  • b) ESTABLISHES THE ROUTE TYPE
  • 1) X ALL WEATHER
  • 2) Y LIMITED, ALL WEATHER
  • 3) Z - FAIR WEATHER ROUTE.
  • c) ESTABLISHES THE MILITARY LOAD
    CLASSIFICATION
  • (MLC) OF THE ROUTE IAW THE LOWEST LOAD
    CLASS OF
  • ANY SECTION OF THE ROUTE
  • d) RECORDS TERRAIN FEATURES (THAT AFFECT
    TRAFFIC
  • FLOW) ALONG THE ROUTE ON THE OVERLAY.

13
MLC
MILITARY LOAD CLASSIFICATION (MLC) IS USUALY
EITHER THE LOWEST BRIDGE CLASSIFICATION ON THE
ROUTE OR THE WORST STRETCH OF ROAD SURFACE.
WHICHEVER IS LOWER
14
MEASURING CURVES
FORMULA R C2 M 8M
2
15
MEASURING CURVES CONT
IN AREAS WHERE MINES ARE SUSPECTED OFF OF THE
ROADWAY, M CAN BE DETERMINED BY TYING STRING OR
TWINE TO THE MIDPOINT OF C THEN SUSPENDING IT
OUT OVER THE OFF-ROAD AREA.
16
MEASURING SLOPES
SLOPES CAN BE MEASURED MANY WAYS. THE BEST FIELD
EXPEDIENT METHOD IS THE LINE OF SIGHT PACING
METHOD.
17
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • SQUAD RECONNOITERS CONT
  • e) IDENTIFIES ANY CRITICAL POINTS ON THE
    ROUTE FOR

  • f) RECORDS ALL MEASUREMENTS IN METERS

18
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • LEADER REVIEWS THE FOVERLAY AND FILLS OUT
    REQUIRED FORMS
  • a) COMPLETES THE OVERLAY WITH ALL
    APPROPRIATE.
  • SYMBOLS RECORDED AT THEIR GEOGRAPHICAL
    LOC.
  • b) ENSURES THE ROUTE CLASSIFICATION FORMULA
    IS
  • PRESENT (LOCATED OVER THE TITLE BLOCK).
  • c) FILLS OUT THE FORMS AS REQUIRED BY THE
    CDR.
  • d) RECORDS MEASURMENTS ON THE OVERLAY IN
    METERS.

19
TASK STEPS AND STANDARDS
  • LEADER BRIEFS HIS HIGHER ON THE RECON MISSION AD
SUBMITS THE OVERLAY AND FORMS TO THE CDR WITHIN
THE TIME PRESCRIBED IN THE OPORD.

21
DA FORM 1248
  • ROUTE RECON REPORT
  • USUALY ACCOMPANIED BY OVERLAY
  • ALL MEASUREMENTS RECORDED IN METERS

22
DA FORM 1248 (REVERSE)
  • LEFT SIDE IS FOR OBSACLES, REPORTABLE CURVES,
    RESTRICTIONS. ETC
  • RIGHT SIDE IS FOR REPORTING ROAD SURFACE CHANGES
  • REMARKS BLOCK CAN BE USED TO REPORT ADDITIONAL
DATA NOT COVERED IN NORMAL REPORT AREAS

23
DA FORM 1249
24
DA FORM 1249 (REVERSE)
