EARLY YEARS

• Was born in Harlem, New York in 1942
• Daughter of a merchant seaman and a domestic
  servant
• Winner of the Merit Award after creating a
  mathematical equation predicting cancer cell
  growth at the age of 16
• Graduated from High School with honors.

HIGH LEVEL EDUACTION

• Went to Hunter College in N.Y. to study chemistry
  and physics.
• 1964-Went to Howard University to do her medical
  training.
• 1968-Went to Columbia University to study the
  field of Ophthalmology.
• 1970-Went to N.Y.U. to specialize in Corneal and
  Keratoprosthesis Surgery.

MAKING A DIFFERNECE

• Her passion was to fight the battle against
  blindness.
• Created a new field within Ophthalmology called
  Community Ophthalmology.
• Worked in different projects to make basic eye
  care available to everybody.
• Created the American Institute for the Prevention
  of Blindness.

HER INVENTION

• Created the Laserphaco probe
• A surgical device designed to remove cataracts
• The first surgical device design to remove
  cataractous lens and restore sight.
• Since 2000 Laserphaco Probe has restore the sight
  of many people in Europe.

• Black woman surgeon at Drew Medical School
• Woman Chief of a Postgraduate training program
• Woman Chair of Ophthalmology in the history of
  the U.S.
• Woman Faculty Ophthalmologist of UCLA
• Woman elected to Honorary Medical Staff
• Elected to Hunter College of Fame
• Elected as Pioneer in Academic Medicine
