DBT for Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Tx is a broad array of cognitive and behavior
    therapy strategies.
  • Different to traditional CBT as there is an
    emphasis on acceptance of the behavior,
    dialectic processes, the therapeutic relationship
    and therapy interfering behaviors.
  • Delivered in 4 primary modes

Interpersonal Chaos
  • Intense, unstable relationships trouble
    maintaining relationships panic, anxiety, and
    dread over relationships ending, frantic attempts
    to avoid abandonment.
  • MODULE Interpersonal effectiveness training
  • -Learning to deal with conflict situations, to
    get what one wants and needs, to say no to
    unwanted requests and demands. Focuses on
    maintaining self-respect and respect from others.

Impulsiveness
  • Problems with alcohol, drugs, eating, spending,
    spending sex, fast driving etc.
  • MODULE Distress tolerance training
  • -Learning to tolerate distress. Discuss the
    connection between inability to tolerate distress
    and impulsive behaviour which very often
    functions to reduce intolerable distress.

Cognitive Dysregulation
  • Problems experiencing or identifying a self a
    pervasive sense of emptiness problems in
    maintaining ones own feelings, opinions,
    decisions when around others.

  • -Learning to go within to find oneself, and
    learning to observe oneself.

Labile Affect
  • Extreme emotional sensitivity, ups and downs,
    moodiness, intense emotional reactions chronic
    depression problems with anger (either
    overcontrolled or undercontrolled).

  • -Learning to enhance control of emotions, even
    though complete emotional control cannot be
    achieved.
