What is EndNote and what does it do?
  • EndNote is an application much like Word and
Excel, except it provides a way to store
references in files called EndNote Libraries
  • EndNote provides a way to put your favorite
references into an EndNote Library that you can
then transfer into a specific format, such as the
APA format or the format of a specific journal.
  • References from EndNote can be exported from an
EndNote Library and printed in any specified
format for a handout or bibliography.
  • EndNote can link to image files or pdfs on your
    desktop from a reference.

4
Goals for Workshop
  • How to create your own EndNote Libraries by
typing in references or importing references from
    Medline or other library databases
  • How to create formatted references and reference
    lists for articles/bibliographies using a
    specific format
  • How to do some troubleshooting with import
filters, output styles and capturing from
databases so you can make EndNote fit your needs
  • How to find creative uses for this very flexible
    information management program

5
Workshop outline
  • Overview of EndNote and similar programs
  • Defining terms used in EndNote
  • Navigating EndNote
  • Create some EndNote Libraries
  • Populate EndNote Libraries using all four methods
    to input references
  • Link to full articles and image files from
    EndNote
  • Format references to output style preference
  • Wrap-up

6
The EndNote website -- you can locate new
filters, new output styles, the entire 600-page
manual, and access the archives of the EndNote
listserv from
7
Now, you are ready to create your own EndNote
Libraries a Library is a file of references.
7
8
  • Open EndNote where you will see a list of your
current EndNote libraries. Since you are just
starting out, you may not have any libraries
created already. Therefore, well create some
    right now.
  • Press the cancel button which will close this
    little window.
  • Under the File select New.
  • Create a file name (or new EndNote Library)
    called Knee_pain.enl
  • Create another new EndNote Library called
    Diabetes_education.enl
  • Create another new EndNote Library called
    Test_library.enl

8
9
Adding references
  • By keyboard
  • By using Connect feature to type in search into
search form, while connecting to a database such
    as PubMed
  • By saving a search in a specific format and file
type (.txt) while in PubMed or other database for
    later import into EndNote
  • By exporting directly while in OVIDs MEDLINE or
    Web of Science

10
1. Adding citations via keyboard
  • Once you have created the new Library called
Knee_Pain.enl, open the library and add a
    reference.
  • Again, adding citations to your new EndNote
Library may be done via keyboard or by importing
into EndNote from a database such as PubMed, OVID
    or PsycInfo.
  • Type a new reference by Edward J. Frank, My knee
is a pain in the foot,
  • published in Journal of Pain Management, July
    2004, volume 4, issue 3,
  • pages 2-18.
  • Type the author as Frank, Edward J. and Edward J.
    Frank to see how EndNote
  • handles input.

10

11
2. Connect feature First select vendor for
search via connection files under Edit menu.
11
12
Next, go to Tools and select PubMed from
Connect menu and type in search
12
13
Once the references are collected from the PubMed
search, you may copy them into one of your
EndNote Libraries
14
Now, do one on your own
  • In the search fields, type in Brander in the
author field and type in Predicting total knee
replacement pain in the title field.
  • Import the reference you locate into your
    Knee_pain.enl library.

15
3. Import groups of references using PubMED,
OVID, PsycINFO and Web of Science
  • Each of the above resources (and many others)
provide a way to e-mail, print, and save lists of
    references.
  • If you save a list of references in the correct
format that EndNote understands, you will then be
able to import the references directly into
    your EndNote Library.
  • Conduct the search, save in a format EndNote
understands and import into EndNote from specific
    resource (PubMed, OVID, PsycINFO, etc.)

16
  • Type knee pain treatment in search line.
  • Press Go button.

16
17
  • Select 10 references by checking the box at the
left of each reference of interest.
  • Click Display and select MEDLINE
  • Select File at Send To pull down menu and
name the file with .txt extension.

18
Import into EndNote Library
  • Open the Knee_Pain EndNote Library and from
    File pull-down menu, select
  • Import.
  • At the Import screen, you will select the
Import format and choose the file you
  • just downloaded from PubMed.
  • 3. Select the Knee Pain.txt file and click on
    the Import button.

18
19
Display preferences
  • Open your Knee Pain Library and sort by author,
    year, title and journal.
  • Go to the Edit pull-down menu and select
    Preferences.
  • Change the fields you want to display in your
    window so you display
  • your custom 1 field.

19
20
Searching and saving in CSAs PsycINFO (same
process as you used in your PubMed search)
21
Save as a .txt file
22
4th method for adding references to EndNote
Direct Exports
  • As noted earlier, practically all databases have
either buttons for saving searches or direct
    exporting.
  • Web of Science and OVID make it so easy to
directly export search results into EndNote that
we will do a couple of very quick searches as
    examples.

23
Web of Science search Web of Knowledge (ISI Web
of Science) on our scroll down menu
24
Entry screen click on Web of Science
25
Select publication years and sections of Web of
Science, and click General Search button
26
Type Knee AND pain AND treatment, and check
box for title only
27
Mark any or all of the references and press the
submit key. When the screen refreshes, click
on the link to go to the marked reference list
27
28
Check off abstract, keywords and then, click
export to reference software
28
29
Web of Science search and export
29
30
This takes you next to EndNote for your import
into one of your EndNote Libraries.
30
31
On to OVID
  • Locate Medline (OVID) in Medical Library scroll
    down menu
  • Select the first option on the OVID menu Ovid
    Medline, 1996-Aug 2004
  • Click off map to box
  • Type search statement knee pain and check box to
limit to English language, 2002-2003 publication
    years.
  • Select all references to export.

32
Check radial button for abstract and subject
headings, Direct Export and click Save button.
You can either select specific references or take
them all.
32
33
Check radial button direct export results
34
You will be prompted to name an EndNote Library
and for import format choose MEDLINE (OVID)
format
35
Creating a bibliography
  • You can search your database by author or keyword
or any other portion of your Library.
  • Once you have retrieved the reference or
references you are looking for, it is time to
format them in an Output style.

36
Searching EndNote
  • Pull up search screen by accessing your Knee_Pain
    Library and locating
  • search references under the References
    pull-down menu.
  • 2. Search osteoarthritis.

36
37
Selecting Output format for bibliography
  • Locate the Output format for the Diabetes journal
    (via Edit and Output Styles)
  • Select Diabetes in the menu above your list of
    EndNote references

38
Creating a bibliography of the references you
located from your search of EndNote Library an
exercise
  • Go to the Edit pull-down menu and select Output
    Style.
  • Select Diabetes.
  • Select some (or all) of the osteoarthritis
references you located during your search of your
    Knee_pain EndNote Library.
  • Next, go to the File pull-down menu and select
    Export.
  • You will be asked for a file name with a .txt
    extension
  • Save and open the file in Word.
  • You have created a bibliography of your selected
    references in the format
  • required for the Diabetes journal.

38
39
You can edit Output styles
  • Note that you may not want to or need to, but it
is possible to create an entirely new output
    style to your specifications.
  • Sometimes journals change style so you can go to
the EndNote website and look for changes to copy
    into your Output Style folder.

40
Editing Output styles
40
41
You can edit Import filters
  • For the brave and/or desperate, you can edit the
import filters or create new import filters for
    your own delimited files.
  • Import filters sometimes need to be updated due
to vendor changes. EndNote posts new filters on
its customer service website for download and
copying to your Import folder (recent example is
    PubMed).

42
Linking from your EndNote Library
  • Depending on the service you download from (Web
of Science, for example), you may be provided
with a link that will take you back to the
    service from your EndNote Library.
  • You may also create links especially for pdf
files of full articles saved to your desktop.
  • Try to link a full pdf article to your database.

43
  • 1. Locate the article Predicting total knee
replacement pain by Brander in your EndNote
    database.
  • Retrieve the pdf of this article via your search
of the Medical Library webpage. Clin Orthop,
    2003, issue 416, pages 27
  • Save the article as a pdf in your EndNote folder
  • Open the Batra reference and go to the URL field
    in the reference
  • Open the pull-down menu under Reference and
    click on Link To.
  • Link to the article you just saved as a pdf.
  • This works for images also. If you would like to
practice, use the image in the Examples Folder in
    EndNote.

43
44
Links to pdf to open this later, open
reference, go to references menu and click

  • SUCCESS! You have now done a search, imported
    references,
  • located duplicates, deleted duplicate references,
    located a full
  • article via the Library webpage, and linked to it
    via your EndNote database.

45
46
