• HOMICIDE- the killing of one person by another.
• MURDER- the unlawful killing of one person by
  another, especially with malice aforethought.

• Arrest any suspects
• Aid the injured
• Protect the crime scene
• Contact detectives

DETECTIVES RESPONSIBILITIES

• Is it a murder?
• Investigate the case until its closure
• Crime scene, evidence collection, weapons, blood,
  semen, maggots fibers, DNA, and profiling

DEATH SIGNSCHANGES AFTER DEATH

• Color of body- Lividity
• Loss of body heat- 1-2 degrees 1st hour. 1 after
  that.
• Rigor mortis- 10-12 hours complete, gone in 18-20
  hours

DEATH SIGNS

• Postmortem lividity- pooling of the blood at the
  lowest part of the body. How long dead, has the
  body been moved,
• Blanching- touch body, it turns white, then
  discoloration returns. 4-5 hours later will not
  do this.
• Marbling

MODES OF DEATH

• Gunshot
• Tattooing or stippling-powder burns on body
• Contact wounds- star shape caused by gases
• Muzzle stamp- imprint of the barrel
• Strangulation- manual or ligature- (petechia)

• Drowning- skin slippage- (1 week in water 2
  weeks on land)
• Poison gases
• Suicides- more men than women.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF MURDER

• Gang murder- gang members, usually in an open
  place, drive by, want people to know, additional
  people may be injured, and total disregard for
  anyone.

• DRUG MURDER-
• 2 TYPES OF FELONY MURDER
• Indiscriminate- planned, weapon brought to scene,
  etc.
• Situational- unplanned, confusion, panic, victim
  of opportunity. Set off by alarm. Ex. Burglary
  / murder.

• DOMESTIC HOMICIDES- 2 categories
• Spontaneous homicides- triggered, not planned,
  usually at their residence, weapon of opportunity.

• Planned event, controlled scene, organized,
  trying to make it look like a robbery, rape, or
  suicide.

• Multiple murders (post office, etc)
• Homosexual murders usually male to male,
  overkill, wounds to face and throat, etc.

  random crime scene, weapon of opportunity, sudden
  attack, no set plan, may contain posing.
