The SCLC
  • The Southern Christian Leadership Conference
  • Main Goal Move towards civil rights through
    peaceful demonstrations
  • Created by MLK in Atlanta in 1957
  • MLK remained leader until his assassination (1968)

  • Fell from view as militant African American
    groups rose and after MLKs assassination

The SNCC
  • The Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee
  • 1960- The SNCC is founded by Ella Baker and John
    Lewis to help African American students with
    their struggles against segregation in the South.
  • The organization was created because of the sit
    in in Greensboro, Alabama.
  • Replaced CORE (Congress of Racial Equality)

The SNCC
  • 1964- The SNCC helps sponsor the Mississippi
    Project, a program run by over 800 volunteers
    that helped African Americans register to vote.
  • 1966- Stokely Carmichael takes authority over the
    SNCC, bringing his militant and violent ways with
    him. This caused many of the white portion of the
    SNCCs followers to withdraw from the program.
  • 1967- Because of his growing unpopularity,
    Carmichael hands the SNCC over to H. Rap Brown,
    who reinstated the groups nonviolent ways.
  • 1969- The SNCC changes its name to The Student
    National Coordinating Committee
  • 1970- The SNCC breaks up
