3Background
- Currently HKEx operates different market networks
with HKATS/ PRS/ DCASS migrated to SDNet in
October 2005
4Background
- Attributes of Existing Networks for AMS/3, CCASS
CCMS and MDF - Adopted different WAN technologies
- Frame Relay for AMS/3 CCASS/ CCMS
- Optical Ethernet (Standard Service) for MDF
- Totally separated (physically)
- Participants have to install dedicated links to
access different market systems through different
networks - Highly mature technology (frame relay) but
limited improvement or development would be
foreseen - Scalability limitation on participant line
bandwidth (2M bps maximum) - High upgrade costs beyond 2M bps (from one
technology to other technology)
5Overview of SDNet
- Benefits
- Cost Saving
- Lower monthly line rental charges
- Further saving through line consolidation in
future - (after completion of Phase 3)
- Scalable Flexible Bandwidth Management
- Wider range of line speeds (up to 4M bps)
- Easy bandwidth upgrade (performed remotely)
- Improved Reliability and Stability (higher
commitments) - Better Network Management
- Manage one network instead of four
- More advanced network management technology
6Overview of SDNet
7Overview of SDNet
- Migration by 3 phases
- HKATS/DCASS/PRS Network (Phase 1)
- migrated in October 2005
- CCASS/CCMS Network (Including FinNet) (Phase 2)
- Tentatively Nov 2005 Jun 2006
- AMS/3 MDF Networks (Phase 3)
- Tentatively Q1 2007 Q4 2007
8SDNet Phase 2 Network Packages
- Network provider will be changed from Wharf TT
to PCCW for SDNet. - Currently, participants can select from different
types of network packages (with different line
speed) according to their operational needs. - To streamline the network operations, some
existing network packages will not be available
under SDNet. Affected participants can upgrade
to the next available package, with the same
charge or even at a lower price. - The changes to the network packages are
summarised as below - 64K and T1 Links not available
- 64K and T1 Links will be upgraded to 128K and 2M
(i.e. equivalent to E1) Links respectively. - ISDN Links not available
- 64K and 128K with ISDN Back-up Link will be
substituted by 128K with 128K Limited Back-up
Link. - The original packages of 256K/ 512K/ T1/ E1 with
ISDN back-up will be substituted by respective
Dual Link packages. - Single ISDN Link (for DCASS Participants only)
will be provided with a comparable SDNet Link.
HKEx will contact those DCASS Participants
separately about the migration arrangement. - Two new packages
- 1M Single/ Dual Links will also be offered to
CCASS and DCASS Participants.
9SDNet Phase 2 Network Packages
- Participants should note the following
constraints of 128K Limited Back-up Link - Same as the ISDN Back-up Link, the 128K Limited
Back-up Link is limited to one terminal
connection only and without FinNet connection. - Same as the ISDN Back-up Link, auto-failover
(from primary link to the back-up link) is not
available for the 128K Limited Back-up Link. - Participant cannot upgrade the line speed of the
128K Limited Back-up Link. - The 128K with 128K Limited Back-up Link package
cannot be designated as the primary link when
participants consolidate different system lines
(when such consolidation arrangement is offered). - This package is only available for Participants
who are using the 64K/128K with ISDN Back-up Link
for the time being. These Participants are also
welcome to select 128K Dual Link package for
streamlining their contingency procedures.
10SDNet Phase 2 Network Packages
- The following table summarises the new network
packages for CCASS/ CCMS after the launch of
SDNet

installation with individual participant - Support for various installation activities by
PCCW during office and non-office hours - Multiple installations may be required for the
Participants with more than one link - Coordinate with Building Management Office for
laying of cable to their buildings (on a need
basis) - Note Development links (for those Participants
who are using CCASS/3 Participant Gateways) will
be installed separately.

27Installation Activities -Important Notes and
Precautions
- Secure accommodation should be provided to house
the new equipment. The location should be in same
cabinet or adjacent to the existing equipment to
facilitate new link set-up and link cut-over. - Do NOT bend the fibre cables and patching cords
(yellow in color). - Stable AC power supply is required (UPS is
recommended). - Environmental conditions air-conditioned with
ventilation. - For fibre pre-wiring works at participant sites,
PCCW will make use of the cabling facilities
provided by the participant as far as possible.
If it is not feasible, PCCW will provide the
necessary facilities for cable fixing or
protection along the route. In case relocation
of the provided facilities is required after
installation, PCCW will consider charging the
participant the costs required for such
alternation. - For Dual Links, separate (dual) AC power feeds
and fuses are recommended.
28SDNet Phase 2 - Migration Costs Service Charges
- Migration Costs
- No installation charges for new participant lines
- No cost for the new routers
- Costs to be borne by Participants
- Arrangement of A/C power
- Accommodation requirements for new equipment,
such as equipment rack - Additional resources requirement due to migration
activities
29SDNet Phase 2 - Migration Costs Service Charges
- Service Charges
- New monthly charge (router charge included) will
be effective upon the launch of SDNet. - After the launch of SDNet, CCASS and DCASS
Participants will pay directly to HKEx for
charges in relation to the network connection. - The following table summarises the SDNet Monthly
Charges

not required to fill in the form. HKEx will
separately contact the affected Participants. - Ensure readiness for participants link
installation as follows - Decide the location of new network equipment
- Provide sufficient space to house the new
equipment - Prepare AC power sockets
- Decide open wiring or conceal wiring for the new
lines - Select an on-site contact person for support of
the installation work by PCCW - Support site survey
