People _at_ TSVP
About Us The Tamil Students Volunteer Program,
or popularly known as TSVP, is an initiative that
was taken by a group of Tamil students in the
University of Toronto less than two months ago.
While the urge to help our brethren back home was
always strong, the recent political developments
in Sri Lanka gave the students a fresh impetus to
formally launch this program. Since that time,
the Program has grown in leaps and bounds to
include students from other Universities,
colleges and high schools thus making it truly, a
Canadian initiative. The TSVP aims to lend
assistance to the re-development of the
devastated educational, medical and economical
infrastructures of the North and East of Sri
Lanka as well as engage in the rehabilitation of
affected Tamil people in these regions. The
uniqueness of our Program does not lie in the
fact that it is engaged in rehabilitation and
development tasks since there are already several
organizations and individuals at work. Rather,
this Program is unique since for the first time,
there is a concerted independent effort by first
and second generation Tamil students in the
Canadian Diaspora to directly lend assistance to
our people and we look towards our community to
guide us in this ambitious endeavour. Todays
event is meant to introduce the Program to the
Tamil and mainstream communities and garner
much-needed support that will contribute to the
development of the Program and its objectives and
influence the direction in which it has set forth
towards. We thank you for your attendance and
continued patronage. - Team TSVP March 23, 2002

2General Overview The organizational structure
and main themes of this Program are outlined
below. Since this Program is a dynamic one, we
encourage you to visit our site frequently to
keep up with the most up to date information on
the Program and its activities. This Program is
currently divided into three projects, namely the
Medical, Technical and Power Project teams. Each
of these teams shall be leaving for the Vanni to
help out the rehabilitation of Tamil students in
the area and will later expand to include
students from the Jaffna and Batti districts as
well. MedicalThe medical team will be composed
of senior undergraduate and post graduate
Canadian university students in the Life Sciences
and Humanities field. Their tasks will include
running mobile clinics, administering treatment,
counseling victims, assisting medical
professionals and other health workers, reporting
on the medical infrastructure of the affected
areas as well as obtaining medical equipments for
hospitals and other facilities as per the
demands. TechnicalThe technical team will be
composed of senior undergraduate and post
graduate Canadian university students in the
Computer Sciences field. Their tasks will include
setting up computer systems in network centers
currently being built in the Vanni district and
other areas, teaching of basic programming
skills, installing and teaching of the latest
software solutions and assist in connecting Vanni
to the World Wide Web. The Canadian arm of this
team will assist in collecting computer systems
and accessories to be shipped to the Vanni.
Power Project The power project team will be
composed of senior undergraduate and post
graduate Canadian university students in the
Physical Sciences field. Their tasks will include
creating and managing micro projects with
renewable sources of power through assembly and
installation of solar panels, wind turbines etc.,
in poorly developed suburban and village areas.
Other ProjectsWater- Study team to investigate
effects of random tube welling on the water
table. To map the geological topography to locate
optimum sites for tube welling. Electrical/Mechan
ical Skills - Train graduates from colleges with
electrical installation and wiring skills and
provide adequate tool acquisition facilities.
For example, we can offer loans for start up
electricians to purchase their first set of
tools. Development Team - Create a development
team between the Jaffna University students and
the Tamil Canadian university students to
identify immediate development priority and
strategies and long-term development priority and
strategies. Identify and assist Canadian
companies and corporations to set up projects and
operations that will increase the business
profits and at the same time assist with the
development projects.

3Medical Team The purpose of this project is to
have Canadian students do volunteer service in
hospitals and mobile clinics throughout the North
and East. While providing direct assistance to
lead medical staff in hospitals and mobile
clinics, the students will constantly provide
reports to the relevant personnel in Canada to
assist with procuring equipment of urgent need
based on their knowledge of equipment being used
in Canadian hospitals. At the commencement of the
project, teams will take minor medical equipment
(ie Glucometers) to assist with the situation
and deploy other equipment as needed during the
course of the project. A report will also be
carried out in the relevant areas to report on
what the future batches of medical team
volunteers can do on their future trips to
increase their effectiveness in such volunteer
teams. PeopleThe following students have been

Team to explore methods and ways of addressing
current power requirements in the affected areas
with the resources and options available to the
team. There is a current partnership with EWB
(Engineers Without Borders) to study their
projects that they have conducted around the
world and to explore the feasibility of them
being implemented in the affected Tamil regions.
As we are still in this preliminary study stage,
we will not be able to determine the full
extent/scope of our projects until such studies
are completed and referred to relevant
development authorities in the affected
regions. Kamalraj Lawrence - Mechanical
