1
Introduction to Ethics in Management
2
Purpose of Course
  • Debate in the fieldCan One really teach business
ethics. Business scams are nothing newevery
    generation every country. Different legal
    systems, etc.
  • Going back to the bibleEarlier recorded scams
in Western literature with Jacob and his Uncle
    Laban

3
  • Called in todays terms bait and switch.
  • Business ethics as an Oxymoron
  • Arthur Anderson (mixed up with Enron) was a
    leader in Ethics training.

4
Authors Believe it can be taught
  • Not certain if taught is the right word.
  • Teaching it implies rules to be ethical. There
are no rules to be ethical

5
  • I can teach you a process. Ethics is decision
making. How does one approach decision making
    via ethical considerations.
  • Talked to several good managers and they view
    every day decision this way.

6
Motivational Also
  • The courage of your convictions to do what is
right. Ethics problems happen when people who
know better let the dark side influence their
    decisions.
  • Share with you a problem a friend of mine had.
  • Is the job worth it? Just because others are
doing does not make it right. Just because
supervisor puts pressure on you does not make it
right. Can you pick firms that operate
    ethically?
  • To some extent, I am preaching towards the
    choir.

7
Thus the purpose of this course
  • The processis stakeholder analysis.
  • Ethical Dilemmas deal with values. In many case
no right or wrong per se. Just different values.
Morals reflect your values or how you apply
    different ethical theories is relevant.
  • Ethical dilemmas (moral dilemmas)situations
concerning right or wrong where values are in
    conflict.
  • Example, thou shall not kill. But war, abortion,
capital punishment, Schaivo all suggest different
    values determine what to do.

8
  • The problems you will address in papers are all
    examples.
  • Hope you approach decision making ethically.
