Early Political Career
  • He joined the "Socialist Youth" in 1929 and the
Social Democratic Party in 1930. He then left
them to join the Socialist Workers Party.
  • In 1933, he left Germany for Norway to escape
Nazi persecution. This is when he acquired the
alias Willy Brandt to avoid the Gestapo.
  • In 1934, he helped found the
  • International Bureau of
  • Revolutionary Youth Organizations,
  • and was chosen as its Secretariat.
  • He visited Germany in 1936,
  • posing as a Norwegian student
  • named Gunnar Gaasland.

Mayor and Foreign Minister
  • In 1948, he joined the Social Democratic Party of
Germany. He became a German citizen again and
adopted his alias as his real name.
  • He was supported by the powerful publisher Axel
Springer. He was chosen as Mayor of West Berlin
and served from October 3, 1957 to 1966.
  • Brandt was the SPD candidate for Chancellor in
1961, but lost. In 1965, he ran against a CDU
    (Christian Democrats) candidate, and lost.
    However, in 1966, the SPD
  • and CDU joined together.

Chancellor Of West Germany
  • Three years later he finally won the
    chancellorship.
  • His stay in office was most know for the
    implementation of Ostpolitik.
  • His government concluded a non-aggression treaty
with the Soviet Union and also normalized
relations with Poland, Czechoslovakia, and East
    Germany.
  • What made Ostpolitik possible was the fact that
it acknowledged the existence of two states in
    the German nation.
  • Though many Germans had their doubts about German
unification, Brandt did not give up on it.
  • In elections in 1972, the SPD led by Brandt
gained its largest election victory ever.

Spy Scandal
  • In 1973, West German security organizations were
told that one of Brandts assistants, named
Günter Guillaume, was actually a spy for the East
German state. Brandt was asked to continue work
    as usual, and agreed.
  • He then took a private vacation with Guillaume.
  • Guillaume was arrested on
  • April 24, 1974, and Brandt
  • was blamed for having a spy
  • in his party. At the same time,
  • some facts (not good ones)
  • about his private life appeared
  • in newspapers.

Developmental Issues, which produced a report,
calling for drastic changes in the world's
attitude to development in the Third World. This
became known as the Brandt Report.
  • Late in 1989, he became one of the first
  • leftist leaders in West Germany to

Quotes
  • Peace, like freedom, is no original state which
existed from the start we shall have to make it,
in the truest sense of the word.
  • Peace is something more than the absence of war,
although some nations would be thankful for that
alone today. A durable and equitable peace system
requires equal development opportunities for all
    nations.
  • May all those who possess the power to wage war
have the mastery of reason to maintain peace.
  • Now grows together what belongs together
