1
Guided Reading Rotation Board
  • Making it Work in Your Classroom

2
Agenda
  • Welcome
  • How to Introduce the Rotation Board
  • Troubleshooting
  • Rotation Board Activities
  • Meet with Grade Team
  • Questions

3
What is a Rotation Board?
  • Use a work board to manage classroom activities
    while doing guided reading
  • Lets students rotate through a variety of reading
    and writing tasks
  • Lets you focus on small groups of students
  • You change jobs only once a week

4
Using the Icons
  • You assign the meaning to the icons
  • You can choose activities to fit your program
  • Select only reading and writing activities or
include activities for math, science, social
    studies, art, drama, etc.

5
Getting Ready for the Board
  • Management mini-lessons
  • Never put out an activity that you have not
modeled several times or completed as a whole
    group
  • Choose meaningful activities that will allow
    students to practise
  • Start with one rotation at a time

6
What will you do if?
  • A student needs to go to the bathroom
  • A student hits another student
  • Students are lacking supplies to complete work
  • Students finish early

7
Choosing Activities
  • Make them meaningful
  • Integrate your themes or units
  • Combine reading and writing jobs
  • Combine stationary and more active jobs
  • Combine jobs that are done independently or with
    partners or small groups

8
Troubleshooting
  • I dont have room for centres.
  • How can this board work for me?
  • Use baskets, bins or rolling drawers to hold the
    materials that students will need.
  • Have students use materials at their desks or on
    the floor.

9
Troubleshooting
  • What if students do not complete all of the
    activities listed for their group?
  • Remember that the activities are for practice
    only
  • The goal is not completed work
  • Can save incomplete work in special folder to be
    completed when finished early

10
Troubleshooting
  • How long will it take to get the
    activities ready?
  • The activities require little planning
  • Basic materials are already in place for most
    centres
  • Change as many activities as you wish each week
    to keep students engaged

11
Troubleshooting
  • What if there is no room at a
    centre?
  • Can happen often, especially at computer centre
  • Can use a sand timer or have students in same
group stager starting times at one centre

12
Troubleshooting
  • How long do children stay in each
activity? Do children have to move through
    the activities on a signal?
  • You can use a signal but some students may not
    have completed the activity
  • Better to model how each activity should be
completed and allow students to move as
    individuals

13
Rotation Board Activities
  • Teachers will have two sessions lasting 10
minutes each to spend at their table discussing
different uses for the manipulatives in their bin

14
Meet with Grade Teams
  • Please find a quiet area in the library with your
grade partners and share your ideas for the
    different centres.

15
  • Questions
  • Please dont forget to pick up a handout on your
    way out!
  • Thank you
