Safety Overview
  • Biohazardous Environment
  • Highly Regulated
  • CAP, JCAHO, AABB, FDA, OSHA
  • Periodic Inspections/citations/fines

Universal Precautions
FDA, JCAHO
  • 1991, OSHAA issued the Occupational Exposure to
    Bloodborne Pathogens standard universal
    precautions (standard precautions SP)
  • Standard precautions require that all human
blood, body fluids, and tissuues be treated as if
infectious required practice in all human
    laboratory settings.

CAP OSHA

with visible blood, any unidentified fluid,
unfixed slides, microhmatocrit clay, and saliva.
  • Treats all such samples as if they contain
bloodborne pathogens whether known to be infected
    or not

6
Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Pathogenic microorganisms that, when present in
    human blood/fluids, can cause disease
  • Examples include HBV, HIV, HCV, others

7
Safety Practices Required by SP
  1. HANDWASHING
  2. NO eating, drinking, smoking, etc

9
Other Safe Work Practices, SP
  • Daily decontamination of work space
  • Soiled clothing left in the work place
  • HBV vaccination
  • Education
  • Waste Management

10
Additional Laboratory Occupational Hazards
  • Fire
  • Chemical Exposure
  • (MSDS required for chemical inventory)
  • Appropriate sorting and storage of chemicals
