Document Object Model
  • Acts as programming interface for HTML and XML
    documents.
  • Provides structural representation to the
    documents.
  • Provides a way to represent, store and manipulate
    web documents.
  • It also called as object-oriented presentation of
    the web pages.
  • It was released for the first time in 1/10/1998.
  • Lastly updated in 2004.Now the stable version is
    DOM4.

  • Initially Dom1 released with some object
    properties later in developing DOM3 new
    properties were added. properties are values of
    HTML elements which can set or change.
  • DOM1 properties are as follows
  • document.anchors returns all ltagt elements that
    have a name attribute.
  • document.applets returns all ltappletgt elements.
  • document.body returns the ltbodygt element.
  • document.cookie returns the document's cookie.
  • document.domain returns the domain name of the
    document server.
  • document.forms returns all ltformgt elements

  1. document.documentMode returns the mode used by
    the browser.
  2. document.documentURI returns the URI of the
    document.
  3. document.domConfigr returns the DOM
    configuration.
  4. document.embeds returns all ltembedgt elements.
  5. document.head returns the ltheadgt element.
  6. document.implementation returns the DOM
    implementation.
  7. document.inputEncoding returns the document's
    encoding .
  8. document.lastModified returns the date and time
    the document was updated.
  9. document.readyState returns the (loading) status
    of the document.

Document Object Methods
  • Methods are actions that you would like to
    perform on objects.
  • DOM has three methods, they are
  • getElementById Returns a reference to the first
    object with the particular value of the id
    attribute.
  • getElementsByName met Retrieves a collection of
    objects based on the value of the name attribute.
  • getElementsByTagName Retrieves a collection of
    objects based on the particular element name.

  • Forms are acts as sub-objects or property of Dom
    objects.
  • The Form object represents ltformgt element of
    HTML.
  • Forms elements be able to accessed through
    the Dom objects.
  • Returns a group of ltformgt  elements.
  • Syntax collection document.forms
  • ltformgt elements can also access by using
    getElementById()
  • Syntax var g document.getElementById(Forms")
  • ltformgt element can be created with
    document.createElement() 
  • Syntax var g document.createElement(form")

Creating and Deleting Cookies
  • Cookies are bits of information stored on the
    user's computer which is been sent by a website.
    EX previously entered URLs, names, and credit
    card numbers etc...
  • These are created when you use your browser and
    Keep tracks your activities within the site.
    Session cookies and persistent cookies are two
    types of cookies.
  • Session cookies are created temporarily in your
    browser, once you leave the site the session
    cookie is deleted.
  • Persistent cookie remains in your browser's
    sub-folder and are activated again you visit the
    same site.

Creating and Deleting Cookies
  • JavaScript uses document.cookie property to
    create and delete the cookies.
  • Cookie creation is follows as below
  • Syntax document.cookie  "username Aaron
    brooks"
  • Deleting a cookie is simple. Just set the expires
    parameter to created cookie
  • Syntax document.cookie  "username Aaron
    brooks expiresFriday, 30 Dec 2016 000000
    UTC"
