Before 1865, Black Owned Businesses, often known as African-American businesses, existed in the days of slavery. Beginning in the Reconstruction Era (1863–77), emancipation and civil rights allowed businessmen to function inside the American legal system. Thousands of tiny businesses had established in urban areas by the 1890s. The greatest rapid expansion occurred in the early twentieth century, as the increasingly rigid Jim Crow segregation system pushed urban Blacks into communities large enough to operate a company.
