Autism

• Characterized by
• Impaired social interactions
• Problems with verbal and non verbal communication
• Unusual, repetitive or severely limited
  activities (steming)
• Limited interest in others
• Preoccupation with certain objects or subjects
• Inflexible adherence to specific routines or
  rituals
• Learning disorders
• Inability to make eye contact
• Children can be diagnosed as early as age 2, and
  as late as 18 years old.

Causes?

• Many theories to causes of Autistic Disorder
• Genetically linked (inherited)
• Abnormalities in cell to cell connections in the
  cortex, and temporal lobe
• Abnormal serotonin synthesis
• Often have differences in brain in frontal lobe
  in, corpus callosum, (smaller) cerebellum,
  (larger) amygdala, (smaller) hippocampus,
  (smaller) and parietal lobes (increased grey
  matter)
• Having rubella during the first trimester of
  pregnancy
• MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine

Treatment?

• There is no cure for Autistic disorder.
• Treatment
• Used to be put in institutions
• Behavioral intervention
• Special Education classes in school
• Medications
