The Feathered Fish
Penguins

Finding Penguins
  • All penguins live in places where the ocean
water stays cold all year long.
  • Penguins live only in the southern half of the
world. Some types live far south, in the frozen
    land of Antarctica.

3
Facts About Antarctica
  • It is the land around the South Pole.
  • It is the coldest place on the planet.
  • It is like a gigantic iceberg.
  • No human beings live in Antarctica

4
Penguin's Anatomy
  • They have a big head, a short, thick neck, a
streamlined shape, a short, wedge-shaped tail,
    and tiny flipper-like wings.
  • Penguins have black and white feathers with
    different color feather patterns.
  • Penguins have webbed feet.
  • Penguins come in different heights and weights.

5
Staying Warm
  • Their black-feathered coat absorbs the heat from
    the sun.
  • Feathers are waterproof
  • Underneath there is a layer of soft down.
  • Underneath soft down is a layer of fat.
  • Reduce circulation of their feet. Their feet act
like heavy-duty boots so they can travel a long
way on ice and snow without getting frostbite.
  • They huddle together to share body heat.

6
Why are penguins black and white?
  • A penguins white belly blends in with the ice
and sunlight above. That makes it hard for
killer whale that might be lurking below to spot
    them.
  • A penguins black-feathered back blends into
the deep, dark Antarctic water below. That makes
it hard for leopard seals that might be hunting
    on the waters surface.

7
Feathers and Molting
  • Penguins have shiny, waterproof feathers that
    help keep their skin dry.
  • Molting is when penguins shed old feathers and
    grow news.
  • It takes two to four weeks to grow a new coat of
    feathers.
  • During the time of molting penguins do not eat.

8
Getting Around
  • There are three ways penguins move
  • Waddling
  • Tobogganing
  • Swimming

9
Super Swimmers
  • They fly through the water, flapping their
    flippers like wings.
  • Penguins are graceful swimmers.
  • To breathe while swimming, penguins speed up
under the water, shoot out above the surface,
take a breath, then dive back in. This is called
    porpoising.

10
Can Penguins Fly?
  • Penguins do fly. They fly through the water, not
    through the air.
  • Their bodies work like torpedoes.

11
How do penguins know it is safe to go in the
water?
  • When a groups of penguins want to enter the
water, they usually send one penguin in first to
see if the coast is clear.
  • If that penguin is munched on by a leopard seal
or a killer whale, then coast is not cleared.

I hope this isnt the last time we see him.
12
Living on Land
  • Penguins gather in large groups called rookies or
    colonies.
  • Rookies can be as large as one million birds.
  • Penguins come on land to molt, mate, and raise
    chicks.
  • Rookies are usually loud, noisy and smelly places

13
Mating Rituals
  • Male penguins usually arrive before females to
    claim their turf.
  • Once he has claimed his territory, he begins to
pump his chest up and down and gives a loud
trumpeting call to let females know he is
    available.
  • Once the male penguins finds an interested
female, the pair will perform a series of
courtship rituals. They give each other pebbles,
bow to one another, and sing together.
  • Penguins usually mate for life.

14
Penguin Facts
Did you know...
15
There are 17 different types of penguins!
16
  • Both penguins parents tend to the young. It is
often the male who incubates the egg.

17
  • The Emperor Penguin is the largest penguin. It
stands at 3.5 to 4 ft. tall and weight
approximately 65 pounds. (The size of a small
    child.)
