position papers or recommendations, brochures, or
other information SHALL NOT be made available at
ASHRAE technical sessions, symposia, seminars, or

    name of author(s)/presenter(s), their
    affiliations, companies, supporting
    organizations, sponsoring technical committee,
and corporate logo. For case studies, with
permission from the study subject, the slide may
also reference the facility owner, facility or
    site of the study.
  • Basically, anything can go on the first slide

10
What is allowed
  • Bibliographies are allowed, but they must be the
    last slide

    nature
  • Equipment can no longer be manufactured
  • Used to build historical context

11
What is allowed
  • Specific reference may be made to
    industry-related standards, test methods and
    codes

    name of organizations, software, government
agencies and government-sponsored agencies may be
referenced only in order to maintain presentation
    clarity and relevance.

13
Things to watch out for
  • Logos and watermarks on your slides.
  • Photographs of equipment with names/logos.
  • Building sign. (Especially - does the
    organization compete with other organizations
likely to be involved in ASHRAE? - for product
    sales or research money).
  • Names or logos on software screen displays -
photos of displays or LCD projection systems.
  • Dont imply ASHRAE approves or endorses a product
because it complies with ASHRAE standards, or for
    other reasons.
  • Dont hand out materials at sessions.

14
Tips
  • Use generic names. (e.g.,R-410a instead of
    Puron).
  • Be aware of what you are photographing.
  • Cover product logos before you photograph.
  • Look at your software displays.
  • Review and rehearse your presentation before you
    come to the meeting.

15
Enforcement
  • All presenters are asked to read and sign
    ASHRAEs commercialism policy.
  • Visuals with problems will be taped, covered, or
    excluded.
  • Exemptions can be granted by the APC chair in
writing PRIOR to the start of the meeting.

52
What is wrong with this picture?
  • Software name.

53
What is wrong with this slide?
  • Possibly nothing, especially if removing software
names makes this presentation useless. Using
    software 1, 2 and 3 does not provide a
comparison the audience can relate to. These can
turn into judgment calls. Ask a veteran member
for backup! Just remember, ASHRAE does not
    endorse products.

54
What is wrong with this slide?
  • The presenter can probably use School 1, 2, 3,
4 just as easily and should change it.
  • Since elementary schools do not compete for
research s like universities, they could use
the names if absolutely necessary for clarity.

55
What is wrong with this slide?
56
What is wrong with this slide?
  • Move test instrument information to create a
    footnote

57
Remember
  • Use common sense.
  • We are not looking to limit programs, just
enforce the rules of the Society to maintain a
    high standard for the presentations.
