These days a high proportion of families -
children and adults - are dealing with a lot of
stress

• Academic challenges
• What most adults learned in first grade is now
  taught in kindergarten
• High expectations for staying on task in all
  grades
• Much earlier physical maturity, surrounded by
  peers also maturing early, and media are not
  helping!
• Social challenges
• Bullying
• Peer access to drugs
• Internet issues/messaging

How can counseling help?

• Can help manage the unmanageable
• If an emotional problem has physiological roots,
  can help identify and manage, together with a
  physician
• Can provide perspective
• Can provide a listening ear and a caring heart
• When an individual is legally entitled to
  accommodation, can document the basis for
  entitlement

Cost

• Many insurance companies cover at least part of
  the cost of short- or long-term counseling
• Medicaid will not pay Licensed Professional
  Counselors, but will pay Community Counseling
• Most low-income families are eligible for CHIPS,
  which pays Licensed Professional Counselors in
  full for counseling services for children.
• Most testing is not paid for by insurance
  companies
