• Grew up in Connecticut in an almost all white
  neighborhood
• Encountered prejudice at a young age
• Mother tried to protect her from this hostile
  treatment by telling her stories of her ancestors
  who fought racial oppression
• These stories led to her love of reading and
  writing

  career in pharmacy
• Turned to writing after she married a writer and
  became a reporter for The Amsterdam News and
  Peoples Voice
• Wrote novels and short stories

About Harriet Tubman

• Admired by Ann Petry for her courage
• Was the leading force behind the Underground
  Railroad
• Led abolitionists and sometimes fed, hid and
  supplied money to escaped slaves
• Made 19 trips on this railroad during which she
  helped over 300 people North to freedom
