6A Tale of Two States
- One Illinois is well off, well educated,
economically dynamic, with a seemingly bright
future.
-
- The other Illinois struggles to make ends meet,
lags in educational attainment, and is
economically stagnant.
Between these two states is a prosperity gap that
is wide and growing and the direct result of
disparities in educational attainment by race,
ethnicity, income, and region.
7Vision
- Illinois will provide effective and quality
education for all people. - The Illinois Public Agenda for College and Career
Success is the pathway to one Illinois, where all

the jobs of the present and the future.

Initiatives
April 8, 2009. The Economic Development Council
(EDC) of the Bloomington-Normal Area, in
conjunction with the Greater Springfield Chamber
of Commerce has been awarded a six-month planning
grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce
and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to develop a plan
for addressing regional workforce development
issues in Central Illinois. . Given the
workforce shortages identified in the area of
nursing, the initial focus of this grant will
address this area.
17Future
- In one sense, the report is a significant
accomplishment the concerted effort to
understand the challenges and opportunities
facing Illinois, and to chart a course for
meeting them. But, nothing will have been
accomplished if the report sits on a shelf. - Therefore, more importantly, the report
represents a beginning a call to arms for
students, parents, educators, labor unions,
business executives, civic leaders, philanthropic
organizations, state agencies, and elected
officials from local school boards to the General
Assembly and Governor. - The Public Agenda for College and Career Success
can make Illinois one state that is ready to face
the future. - Carrie J. Hightman
