Title: INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIC PLAN

1
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIC PLAN
2
Objective 1 of 4
  • By May of 2008, ASUJ will have implemented plans
to create a mechanism for training and ongoing
support of faculty in instructional technology,
    distance learning, and online education.
  • Although this objective is specific to ASUJ an
in-depth assessment is needed within the ASU
    SYSTEM to ensure consistency throughout
    (consistency with platforms, operating systems,
    computer programs and so forth).

3
Action 1 of 4
  • To develop Office of Instructional Design within
    the Office of AAR

4
Rationale for Action
  • In order to fully embrace technology essential
for growth in the arenas of on-campus
instruction and distance learning a separate
division within the university system with
adequate financial support is crucial for
longevity and credibility with the university
community. Without such a resource faculty will
not utilize technology nor implement distance
learning in an academically and pedagogically
    sound manner.
  • It is recommended that CLT be restructured to
house the Director of Instructional Design as
well as current CLT facets. It is also
recommended that the Director of Instructional
Design report directly to the VCAAR.

5
Responsible Party(s)
  • VCAAR
  • and
  • Director of Instructional Design

6
Resources Required
  • Initially, a Director of Instructional Design,
two Instructional Design (ID) Specialists, one
staff member, three GA lines, office space, and
    equipment.
  • This office is expected to expand as more faculty
use its resources. The timeframe for and level
of expansion will depend upon the rate of
instructional technology adoption by the faculty.

7
Cost(s) and Source(s) of Funding
  • 300,000.00 in the first year.

Timeline
Implement plans by July 1, 2008
8
Action 2 of 4
  • Establish Hiring Standards for ID Staff Member(s)

9
Rationale for Action
  • The level of support required by faculty in
designing instruction and the need to train and
supervise graduate assistants require a fully
qualified professional with a high level of
    skill. Knowledgeable staff and Graduate
    Assistants with appropriate social skills
functioning within unit will be needed to provide
accessible and reliable resources for faculty
that will actually be utilized sufficiently to
provide high quality instruction for students.

10
Responsible Party(s)
  • Director of Instructional Design

11
Resources Required
  • A Director of Instructional Design, one staff
member, and a minimum of three GA lines.

12
Cost(s) and Source(s) of Funding
  • See AP One

Timeline
Implement plans by August 1, 2008
13
Action 3 of 4
  • Provide ID Specialist for ASUJ System

14
Rationale for Action
  • Faculty need assistance in adapting their
instruction to the requirements of modern
technologies and the demands of distance learning
formats. Only an ID Specialist with knowledge of
both human learning and instructional technology
can provide the level of assistance needed. In
addition, the level of assistance needed by
faculty will require someone working in this
capacity full-time rather than as an additional
role for either a full-time faculty or IT
    position.

15
Rationale for Action
  • Many systems within the state and within the ASU
system use different information technology tools
including different platforms as well as
    different operating systems and computer
programs. This ID Specialist will be in charge
of providing support and training for those
needing to transfer to our systems. It is also
recommended that this individual be a part of the
decision making process for bringing any new
    technology to the campus.

16
Rationale for Action
  • A highly skilled professional will be required to
train and supervise graduate assistances to
provide faculty with routine assistance with
instructional platforms and software to increase
use of technology while minimizing the cost of
    this routine assistance.

17
Responsible Party(s)
  • Director Instructional Design

18
Resources Required
  • See Action One.

19
Cost(s) and Source(s) of Funding
  • 30,000 50,000

Timeline

20
Action 4 of 4
  • Develop Standardized Training for Faculty

21
Rationale for Action
  • Uniformity in product training delivery and
  • educational content will reduce
    staffing needs and related costs.

22
Responsible Party(s)
  • Director of Instructional Design

23
Resources Required
  • See AP One.
