Title: Integrated Urban Water Modeling Experiments

1
Integrated Urban WaterModeling Experiments
  • Toine Vergroesen, Ambarish Biswas
  • Singapore Delft Water Alliance

2
Objectives
  • To provide insight in urban water systems, by
understanding the relevant processes of the urban
water system and their mutual interaction
  • To develop an integrated approach for designing
and controlling urban water, including the
    accompanying modeling instrument
  • To validate a number of relevant processes as
well as the effect of measures on the amount and
the delay time of the urban runoff, through
    experiments and modeling

3
Principles
Model requirements Integration of rainfall
runoff, surface water, groundwater and sewer
flow Scaling of processes from fine to
course Simultaneous use of different
scale levels, including processes Free exchange
of processes, modules or complete programs
Research Questions How do the different parts
interact? How can we fit the different time
scales? How can we make a flexible and relatively
fast calculation scheme? What is the range of
validaty of the relevant processes at different
scales? How can we use different descriptions
for the same processes simultaneous? How do we
make the structure of the instrument that
flexibel?

State of the Art
  • We understand the different parts of the urban
    water system quite well.
  • We started (partly) integrated water modeling in
urban areas years ago, mostly by linking existing
    models or modules together.
  • We still have difficulties understanding the
mutual interaction of the different parts of the
water system especially in urban areas, where
    complexity is high.

Relevant remaining problems Constrained links
of stand alone models and modules. Different
parts of the water system require different time
frames. Different time frames and different
scales require different process descriptions.
Relevant research questions for Singapore How
can we reduce the peak-runoff? How can we delay
(parts of) the urban runoff?
