The Bystander
The Creating a Peaceful School Learning
Environment (CAPSLE) program works to develop
mentalizing skills- the capacity to interpret
ones own and others behavior in terms of mental
states- in students and staff.
It begins with bystanders perceiving and
accepting their own (unthinking) role in
maintaining the bully-victim relationship through
abdicating responsibility and making an implicit
decision not to think about what the bully/victim
is experiencing.
CAPSLE created more positive bystander behaviors,
greater empathy for the victim, and less
favorable attitudes towards aggression.

  • Studies of Partnerships in Prevention Science
    Institutes Iowa Strengthening Families Program
(IFSP) and Life Skills Training Program (LST)
    demonstrated significant cost benefits.
  • The research estimated how may cases of drug use
each intervention prevented, then compared the
cost of each successful intervention to the cost
    savings to the community.

PREVENTION MAKES ECONOMIC SENSE
Every dollar invested in substance-abuse
prevention yields 10 in savings.

Smoking Parents Influence Adolescent Tobacco Use
  • Parental smoking significantly influences the
likelihood that children will take up cigarettes.
  • Children of smokers ages 12 or younger were about
3.6 times more likely to smoke than children of
    non-smokers
  • Adolescents ages 13 and older when their parents
smoked were about 1.7 times more likely to smoke.

Cigar Smoking Remains Stable Among Young Adult
Males
Nearly one in five males (18.4 percent) ages
18-25 reported smoking a cigar in the past month
in 2007, compared to 16.8 percent in 2002. It
is important for young adults to understand- and
for prevention and intervention programs to
continue to emphasize- that cigar use is not a
healthy alternative to cigarette smoking.

Beer Commercials Among Favorite Super Bowl Adds
for Teens
  • Drug-Free Action Alliance surveyed 8,400 youth in
middle and high school to find their favorite
    adds.
  • The top two adds were for Doritos followed by
three ads for Anheuser-Busch alcohol products.
  • 98.7 million people watched Super Bowl XLIII,
with a large proportion of viewers under age 21.
  • The message to parents have conversations with
    your kids about these commercials.

Advocates Call on Tween Stores to Stop Selling
Flasks
  • Flasks decorated with charms and designed to
hold 5 ounces of liquor are available for 12.50
and one-shot keychain flasks with room for the
individual's initials are available for 8.50.
  • The flasks show disclaimers that the product is
not meant for minors, and warns that flasks are
designed to carry alcoholic beverages. . . .
  • Advocates are concerned that Icing by Claires
is encouraging underage drinking by selling
flasks, while targeting its products to girls as
    young as 17.

Teens Display Risky Behavior on MySpace
Researchers say that half of teen MySpace sites
include references to sex, drug use, or other
high-risk behavior, with 41 percent of sites
studied featuring drug-related information.
Another study which looked at MySpace profiles
of 18 year olds found that 54 percent of profiles
available to the public showed information
regarding high risk behavior.
