The characteristics of living organisms

The Seven Characteristics of living organisms
  • All organisms show seven common characteristics
at some stages in their life
  • These characteristics are the life processes
  • Non-living things only show some of them

1. Movement
  • Animals move from place to place with legs, wings
    or fins
  • They need to search food, mates and escape from
    enemies
  • Plants are anchored in the soil and they usually
    move by growing
  • Comparatively slow

6
2. Respiration
  • Organisms break down food
  • in their cells by a process called
respiration to supply energy for movement, repair
    and growth
  • Respiration
  • Glucose oxygen ?carbon dioxide water
    energy
  • It occurs in every cell in plants and animals

7
3. Sensitivity (Irritability)
  • Organisms have the ability to detect changes
    (stimulus) and respond to them
  • Animals are more sensitive than plants
  • Plants detect external stimuli such as light and
    water

8
4. Growth
9
(No Transcript)
10
4. Growth
  • Increase in size, weight and complexity
  • Plants keep on growing throughout their lives
while animals stop growing when they reach a
    certain size

11
5. Reproduction
  • Organisms produces offspring (new individual)
  • Ensure the species does not die out (i.e. to
    prevent extinction)
  • Sexual reproduction male female
  • Asexual reproduction only 1 parent is needed

12
6. Excretion
  • Organisms remove the metabolic wastes (e.g.
carbon dioxide, urea) produced from the chemical
    reactions inside their bodies
  • Animals excrete the wastes in the form of expired
    air, sweat and urine
  • Plants remove wastes by either turning them into
harmless substances or removing them when leaves
    fall off

13
7. Nutrition
  • Organisms need food for energy, growth and repair
    and to maintain life
  • Green plants have chlorophyll ? carry out
    photosynthesis
  • Animals need to eat plants or other animals as
they cannot synthesize food by themselves
