2About Confucius Institutes
- Confucius Institute program is a world
wide program supported by The Office of Chinese
Language Council International (Hanban). The goal
of this program is to promote a better
understanding of the Chinese language and culture
among the people of the world develop friendly
relationships between China and other countries
accelerate the development of multiculturalism at
the international level and help bring about
global peace and harmony.
3The Confucius Institutes provides the following
services
- Developing Chinese language courses for various
social sectors - Training Chinese language instructors for local
institutions and providing them with Chinese
language teaching resources - Establishing local facilities for the holding of
the HSK Examination (Chinese Proficiency Test)
and for the administration of procedures for the
Certification of the Chinese Language Teachers - Providing information and consultative services
concerning Chinese education, culture, economy
and society - Promoting research about Contemporary China.
4Since the first Confucius Institute in the world
was officially opened in Seoul, the Republic of
Korea on November 21, 2004, now there about 260
Confucius Institutes have been established in 75
countries over the past few years.

support from the Ministry of Education of China,
through the Office of Chinese Language Council

Confucius , the founder of Confucianism
Confucius was a famous sage and social
philosopher of China whose teachings deeply
influenced China and East Asia for more than 25
centuries.

7The Analects of Confucius
The Lun Yü (The Analects of Confucius), a work
compiled by some of Confucius disciples, is
considered the most reliable source of
information about his life and teachings. It was
the most widely read books in ancient China. It
has also been translated into many languages and
considered as one of the most important classics
in human history.
8The basic Confucian doctrines are embodied in the
following 5 characters
Benevolence, love, to be humanity, mercy and
kindness
Justness, to be righteousness, persist on
principles
Rituals, custom and law, to be polite, respect,
modest, harmonious with each other
Wisdom, to be knowledgeable, enlightened and well
educated
Sincerity, reliable, obligated, creditable,
accountable
9- Although Confucius and Confucianism has
undergone severe criticizing and denouncing in
the past century, Confucius and his teaching
today are still considered as a symbol
representing the essence and basic value of
Chinese culture by many people.
10Zhong and He, these two Chinese characters
represent a Confucian way of dealing with variety
of social, political and human relation problems,
meaning keeping on a middle and neutral way,
maintaining a balance between extremists, being
tolerant to dissidents, advocating diversity
while valuing harmonious. These viewpoints or
values are highly emphasized by Chinese people
and its government in dealing with their
domestic problems as well as the international
relations.

Confucius belong to the World!
- On the eastern pediment of the Supreme
Court building,there is a sculpture entitled
Justice the Guardian of Liberty by Hermon A.
McNeil, which was intended to be a symbolic
representation of three of the Eastern
civilizations from which the laws of the USA were
derived, personified by the figures of three
great lawgivers Moses, Confucius, and Solon
(surrounded by several allegorical figures
representing a variety of legal themes).
12Confucius Institutes a world wide resources
that can be used in teaching of Chinese language
and culture.
In 2007 only, Hanban has total expenditure of
459,840,000 RMB yuan or roughly 70 million USD
for supporting all the Confucius Institutes and
related activities.

14Universities and Teachers
- About 100 Chinese Universities and
institutes are involved in the program,
cooperating with their foreign partners in their
local Confucius institute to promote the teaching
of Chinese language and culture. - Thousands of Chinese language teachers and
volunteers from these universities have been send
to schools allover the world to teach Chinese,
with the salary paid by Hanban. - In 2007, Hanban has send out 1532 teachers,
1445 volunteers.
15Free Books
- Hanban has organized the compiling and selecting
of thousand kinds of textbooks and reference
books in different languages suitable for foreign
students to read. Most of these books can be
acquired as a free donation from Hanban. - In 2007 alone, Hanban has send 813000 books to
1616 organizations in 95 countries.
16Multimedia Resources
- Hanban, with the cooperation of many language
education experts, both inside and outside of
China, has also developed many wonderful
multimedia teaching materials, suitable for
different learners to use.
17Career Developing Opportunities
- As an effort of promoting the domestication of
Chinese language teachers, Hanban through its
Confucius Institute allover the world, provides
many teachers training programs for local Chinese
language teachers or potential teachers.
In 2007, 16,000 teachers from 70 foreign
countries received Chinese training.
18Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition
for Foreign College Students
Through TV broadcast, some of the participants
become very popular among ordinary Chinese
audience, and may become the next alien pop idol
in China, like the famous Canadian Mark Rowswell
or Dashan.
19Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for High School
Students
950 foreign students participated this years
Summer Camps.
20HSKChinese Proficiency Test
In 2007, 138,000 foreigner (times) took the HSK
examination. 116 overseas examination sites
established in 46 countries.
21Radio Confucius Institute
Cooperatively established by China Radio
International (CRI), the Radio Confucius
Institute relies on a large number of
international stations broadcasting Confucius
Classroom online and wirelessly in 38 foreign
languages.

University declared its official opening in April
23,2007
29It is a cooperative project of North Carolina
State University, Office of Chinese Language
Council International (Hanban) and Nanjing Normal
University in China
The goal of the Confucius Institute is to enhance
intercultural understanding in the U.S. by
sponsoring programs in Chinese language and
culture promote the mission through a range of
educational and outreach activities to students,
teachers, businesses, and community members
contribute to the expansion of Chinese language
instruction at NC State and in North Carolina
schools, enrich cultural opportunities and help
North Carolina businesses understand and compete
in the Chinese market.
30Nanjing Normal University
Located at Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu
Province, and historically the old capital of
more than 7 dynasties in ancient China.
It was originally funded in 1902, and is among
the one hundred top Chinese Universities included
in the national 211project, and get enhanced
investment from both the central and provincial
government.
