I. Texas Revolution
  • Opening battles-
  • 1.The Battle of Gonzales- October,2,1835- Texans
    refused to return a cannon, defeated the force
    sent to get cannon- Come and Take It 1st battle
    of revolution
  • 2. Goliad- Oct. 9, 1835- Texans captured
    ammunition and arms
  • 3. San Antonio- Oct-Dec, 1835- Texans surround
    town, eventually force General Cos to surrender
    and leave Texas

II. The Consultation
  • Met in November, did not call for independence
  • Representatives sent to U.S. for support- Austin
    (left Texas without the peoples choice as leader,
    Wharton, Archer-
  • Plan for an army- Houston made commander in chief
    (no army)
  • Meet in March, 1836
  • Provisional government doesnt work out

III. The Alamo
  • Bowie was told by Houston to abandon Alamo-
    (death trap)
  • Travis and Bowie decide to make it into fort
  • Feb. 23,1836- Mexican army shows up in San
    Antonio, force Texans into Alamo
  • Texans- about 190 men, Mexican army-
  • 3-4 thousand

  • Travis- becomes leader of defenders after Bowie
    gets sick, sends out for help- only 32 men from
    Gonzales come
  • March 6, 1836- 3 attacks on Alamo- all defenders
    are killed, including Davy Crockett, who might
    have surrendered and then was executed
  • Caused Texans to flee to east, also gave Texans
    reason for revenge- Remember the Alamo

IV. Texas Government
  • March 2, 1836- Declaration of Independence,
    written by George Childress
  • Constitution- almost exact copy of U.S. one
  • 1. Executive- president- carry out laws
  • 2. Legislative- Congress, make laws
  • 3. Judicial- interpret laws
  • 4. Bill of Rights-freedoms that could not be
    taken away

  • Provisional government- Henry Smith Provisional
    governor, Sam Houston, commander in chief of army
  • Problems-
  • 1. No army to command
  • 2. No money to raise an army
  • 3. Houston could not get different groups of
    soldiers to listen to him

V. Texans in Trouble
  • Runaway Scrape- Settlers flee toward Louisiana,
    leave their houses and run away from Santa Anna
  • Battle of San Patricio and Refugio- Texas defeats
  • Fannin (Goliad) caught with his army at Coleto
    Creek- Mar. 20, surrendered
  • Mar. 27- Texans taken out of Goliad and executed-
    350 Texans shot or killed

VI. Battle of San Jacinto
  • Sam Houston moves east, waits for a good spot to
    fight
  • Santa Anna divides army, gives Houston the chance
    to win
  • Apr 21, 1836- Houston attacks Mexican army- 19
    minute battle- 630 Mexicans killed, 600 taken
    prisoner, Santa Anna captured next morning
  • Santa Anna agrees to give Texans independence-
    ends Texas Revolution

VII. Results of Revolution
  • Santa Anna orders his troops out of Texas
  • Texas government begins to function- 1st
    election- Sept. 1836
  • Treaty sets Rio Grande as border
  • Mexico recognizes Texas as independent
  • Santa Anna sent back to Mexico by way of the
    United States- gives Americans to idea for
    chewing gum- chicle
