SWING
  • Swing is a type of Big Band jazz that was the
rage from the late 1930s and 1940s.
  • The period from 1935 - 1949 became known as the
    Swing Era.
  • With its rhythmic energy and swinging beat this
    music was made for dancing.

DANCEDANCEDANCE !!!
  • Big bands with up to 19 musicians became popular
    all over the country.
  • Huge crowds flocked to clubs across the country
to dance to the sounds of the big bands
  • Radio spread the beat across the nation and many
danced at home to the radio.
  • Teenage youth abandoned the serene fox trot and
waltz of their parents in favor of the frantic
gyrations of the jitterbug and the lindy hop

THE POWER OF MUSIC
  • After the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the Great
Depression, people turned to music and motion
    pictures to lift their spirits.
  • World War II united Americans as they had never
    been before.
  • During the war music played a large part in the
lives of the men in uniform.
  • Music was used to boost the morale of the
soldiers and to help keep patriotism alive on the
    home front.

5
United Services Organizations
  • The U.S.O. was formed to provide entertainment
    for the troops.
  • From 1941 until the end of the war 200 bands
    played music for the U.S.O.
  • Many entertainers traveled overseas to entertain
    troops.
  • Comedian Bob Hope was one of the best.

6
V- DISKS
  • The only records being made during World War II
    were called V-Disks.
  • More than 8 million V-Disks were produced between
    1943 and 1949.
  • Artists gave freely of their time and talents.
