Important Standing Committees
  • Standing committees handle the normal course of
activity (non-technical) for AIAA. There are 20
Standing committees which report through various
chains at the board of director level. Several
of the standing committees that GTTC interacts
with more frequently are described in the
    following pages (source AIAA website).

13
Important Standing Committees
Academic Affairs Committee Works closely with
educational institutions and appropriate
accrediting agencies to encourage high standards
of technical education. Staff Contact Stephen
Brock Career Enhancement Committee Monitors and
develops programs which help technical
professionals to expand their horizons and grow
in the aerospace environment. Provides assistance
to members on career planning and growth
including engineering registration activities.
Develops and disseminates information on industry
trends relevant to the work force. Staff Contact
Karen Thomas Finance Committee Develops and
recommends policies and procedures concerning
AIAA's financial affairs and activities. The
ideal member on this committee would possess
experience in business management, financial
operations, banking or long-range strategic
planning. Membership on this committee represents
a cross-section of AIAA's government, academia,
or industry constituency as well as liaisons from
other standing committees. Staff Contact David
Quackenbush Honors and Awards Committee Develops
and recommends policies and procedures concerning
the establishment and selection of honors and
awards. Staff Contact Carol Stewart Internationa
l Activities Committee Develops and recommends
policies and procedures concerning the
international activities of the Institute. Staff
Contacts Emily Springer
14
Important Standing Committees
Membership Committee Develops and implements
plans to attract and provide leadership
opportunities for the current and future leaders
of the aerospace profession. Focuses on the
changing aerospace professional workforce and
recommends programs to provide opportunities for
emerging groups. Additionally, the Committee
steers Institute activities concerning membership
grades, development, retention and dues
policy. Staff Contact Sonja Moore Precollege
Outreach Committee Monitors and develops programs
to promote the importance of math, science, and
technology education in a precollege setting.
Stimulates technical interest and develops a
sense of importance through a medium (aerospace)
that is fascinating to youth. Works with the AIAA
local sections to establish an effective outreach
program that fits the individual requirements of
each economical and geographical location. Staff
Contact Lisa Bacon Professional Member
Education Committee Addresses the continuing
education needs of professional members. Staff
Contact Patricia Carr Public Policy
Committee Develops and recommends policies and
procedures concerning government relations and
public information programs conducted by
AIAA. Staff Contact Steve Howell
15
Important Standing Committees
Publications Committee Develops and recommends
editorial and publication policies and practices
and information services. Works with journal and
book Editors-in-Chief to constantly improve both
quality and viability of AIAA archival
publications. Investigates and recommends new
methods of information delivery, i.e., CD-ROM and
online. Committee members should have a strong
interest in and direct experience with scholarly
publications, preferably as an editor, author,
and/or reviewer. Staff Contact Norma
Brennan Standards Executive Council Guides the
AIAA Standards Program including the development
of AIAA standards, guidelines, and recommended
technical practices. Staff Contact Craig
Day Student Activities Committee Oversees
university, college, junior college, and
technical institute student activities. Staff
Contact Stephen Brock Young Professional
Committee Creates and implements programs to
assist young professionals in the first 10 years
of professional practice. Works with AIAA
technical committees to enhance opportunities for
young professional participation. Eases
transition of university student members into the
work force through specific programs designed to
create professional awareness. Committee members
should be participating aerospace professionals
in their first 10 years of professional
practice. Staff Contact Chris Horton
