Francesca
Francesca enters post-16 knowing that hotel
management will be her chosen career and she
plans her hospitality Diploma pathway
accordingly. She is a self starter and has
already thought about where she might do her work
experience and sounded out the manager of a local
holiday village. She gained respectable grades at
GCSE when she took Food Technology, French and IT
options alongside the core and feels confident
about using this knowledge and experience down
the line. She thinks it will be useful to have a
language to at A level standard and will take it
as ASL. She plans to use holidays to gain
additional (paid) work experience and would
really like the opportunity to live in at an
hotel preferably at the seaside!

Extended Project
Francesca was interested in evaluating management
within the hospitality sector. She carried out
research to determine the generally accepted
theories and models of management and then
investigated the approaches taken by some local
businesses, including a range of hotel chains and
individually owned establishments. She solicited
the information that each provided to job
applicants and any staff training materials that
were used on management training programmes
together with information on recruitment and
retention. She quickly discovered that including
small institutions made it very complicated and
decided to narrow the focus to those businesses
that had their own management training
programmes. In her analysis she took care to
tentatively explore the correlation of
recruitment and retention data with
characteristics of management. She drew
conclusions on the success of the approaches to
management used by each of the companies. She
also evaluated the methodology that she had used
in the project.
identifying gaps in the teams experience and
knowledge. They were able to collect a set of
issues and questions and present them to the
Senior manager when she visited the school in
advance of the week-end. The learners then worked
with their teacher to address their areas of
weakness and they learnt to make use of scenario
planning. The week-end went smoothly with only
few chewed nails. Time dedicated to the
preparation left just a week to spend at the
holiday village. Francesca decided to go ahead
and was able to organise the last week of year 12
end-on to the summer break and a temporary
holiday job.
Francesca had been expecting to do her work
experience at the holiday village nearby but that
was before she learnt that her consortium had
developed a dedicated and special relationship
with a small hotel in a tourist area of the UK.
This was a new initiative and would involve a
team of diploma level 3 learners planning for,
and then running the hotel for a week-end. The
experience of running the hotel was a very
special opportunity and involved assessing risk,
negotiating roles and responsibilities
beforehand, practising and honing skills and
