Clothing
  • Women wore and under tunic, stola, palla and gold
    embroidery.
  • High ranking people wore a white tunic, purple
    tunic and gold embroidery.
  • Common people wore tunics.
  • Your toga showed how wealthy you were.
  • Women loved jewelry and wore their hair up.
  • Girls and boys wore a simple tunic down to their
    knees with a belt.

Food
  • They ate 3 meals a day.
  • Breakfast included bread dipped in wine, honey,
    dates and olives.
  • Lunch included bread, fruit and cheese.
  • Dinner had 3 courses.
  • First- (appetizer) wine, salad, eggs, shellfish
    and mushrooms.
  • Second- pork, poultry, fish, birds and
    vegetables.
  • Final- (dessert) fruit, honey cakes and nuts.

  • Slaves
  • Slaves were often treated badly in wealthy
    families.
  • Slaves would be expected to cook, clean and do
    other jobs.
  • Slaves would do womens jobs in wealthy homes.
  • Men
  • Mens work depended on where you lived.
  • One important job was the administration of the
    empire.
  • In the country side work was centered around the
    villa.
  • Women
  • Women cooked, cleaned, sewed, and maintained the
    house.
  • Wealthy girls would spin wool, weave cloth, and
    sew.

  • Wealthy families would have a tutor for the boys.
  • They would be taught public speaking. This was
    very important.
  • Other subjects included, reading, writing, and
    counting.
  • Girls were not taught the same skills as boys.
  • They were taught by their mothers to spin wool,
    weave cloth and sew.
  • Poor children were taught by their parents.
  • Slave children had no education.

  • Roman Religion was a function of Roman law.
  • It was centered around the gods.
  • They believed that gods controlled their lives.
  • They spent a great deal of time worshipping the
    gods.
  • The most important god was Jupiter. He was the
    king of the gods and ruled with his wife, Jund,
    the goddess of the sky.
  • Other gods included, Mars, Mercury, Neptune,
    Janus, Diana, Vesta, Minerva, and Venus.

  • Sculptures were used to decorate public and
    private buildings.
  • Much of Roman art was used to glorify their
    ruler.
  • The Pantheon is one of the best preserved
    buildings in Rome.
  • Roman Art was more realistic than many styles of
    the cultures preceding it.
  • Portraits were made to idolize.
  • They made Sculptures of the gods.

Invention
  • They invented wonderful roads, theaters and
    public bath complexes.
  • The bathtub was one of the greatest inventions of
    all time.
  • They invented the water wheel to pump the water
    out of mines.
  • They invented Roman Numerals
  • Aquaducts brought water into the city.
  • Aquaducts were essential to Roman life.

Housing
  • Most Romans lived in Apartments called insulae.
    These were many stories high.
  • Rich Romans also had a country house called a
    villa.
  • They used the villa to escape from the noisy city
    of Rome.
  • Most housing included a dining room, baths,
    bakery, kitchen, bedrooms, and a courtyard.
