Dr. jan jagodzinski Professor Department of
Secondary Education

jan jagodzinski is a Professor of Secondary
Education. He was born in Luton, England shortly
after WW2 in a Polish community.
An immigrant to Canada in 1956 he feels he is
pulled between two continentsboth attached and
disattached to Poland, England, Canada and
Austria and the languages that are spoken.
jans passion is visual art and theory. His
background as an artist (B.F.A.), an art teacher
(B.Ed.) and a university teacher has shaped his
concerns for critical education.
The Stamp Trade is an example of his recent
visual work.

My artwork has changed over the many years
because of the university setting. Education was
not conducive to supporting studio practice.
What you see here is a series of panels I did
for an exhibition called Voices of Color in
Illinois.
I started as a painter and exhibited my works in
a gallery in Edmonton in the mid-70s. The
university forced me to change.
At one time I was into performance art, and now
try to combine my interest in theory with the
visual through book writing.
4
Experifigural is a world I coined to bring
together the letter and the line, the textual
and the figural after the late Lyotards work.
Outrageous speaks for itselfboth excessive and
angry. The cover designs are my own in a style I
call lart brut.
These are two books that deal with the visual and
theory. The term pun(k) deconstruction, I hope
is self-explanatory for those who are familiar
with recent French theory.
I believe an anti-aesthetic speaks much louder
than the refined hyped-beauty we are pushed by
designer capitalism today.

My son was punished for being messy at school
when he was in elementary. So far no one has
punished metoo severely. When I leave the
department and move, I hear part of the building
will shift back to its once normal level. The
Leaning Tower of Pizza will have lost its charm.
My favorite work place is like Francis Bacons
art studio. For those who know of his work, Bacon
never threw much out. His studio was an
archaeological dig, one side was filled with all
the paint tubes he had every used. This is, of
course, the edge between order and chaos where
risk happens. It is also a space, which is very,
very messy.
6
This is the first book I have ever written. Its
called the Anamorphic I/i. I Xeroxed and reduced
the pages and spread the book out on a single
flat plane knowing that only about two people in
the world have ever read its 670 pages in 10pt.
from cover to coverme and my copy editor! I have
underlined my favorite page493.
Its in the chapter called HONEY I SHRANK . . .
! Look it up.
