Call it a power outage, power cut, power
blackout, power failure or a just blackout,
nothing effects life more than an electrical
power outage in 21st century.
3
Some of the leading causes of an electrical
outage include
fault in power stations, damage to power
distribution system, short circuit, or
overloading.
4
Here is a list of some notable power outages in
the history of United States.
5
On November the 9th, 1965 blackout that left 30
million people of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island,
and Pennsylvania without electricity for more
than 13 hours. This blackout is also known as the
Northeast blackout of 1965 which was a result
of Human error. The blackout also affected some
parts of Ontario, Canada.
6
On August the 5th,1969 the state of Florida
blacked out and stopped the people of Florida
from everything of their daily life routine for
more than 2 - 8 hours and resulted as one of the
busiest traffic jams in the history of Florida.
7
The state of Florida went dark again on 17th of
May 1985 for more than 3.5 hours. The power cut
was a result of a fire in transmission lines. The
blackout affected approximately 4.5 million
people.
8
On October 17th, 1.4 million people in Northern
California faced massive power outage after the
Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 that damaged
almost all the electrical substations.
9
Washington and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho probably
faced the biggest and longest power outage in the
history of United States. On November 19th, 1996,
an ice storm knocked the power out of the regions
for up to 14 days.
10
For more than 8 hours, around 945,000 people of
San Francisco, California faced an enormous and
long power cut on December 8th, 1998. Millions of
dollars of economic loss were also faced as a
result of this outage.
11
For 12 long months, the whole state of California
faced regular power outages affecting
approximately 33 million people. The power
failures were a result of energy shortages. That
dark period is also known as California
electricity crisis of 2000-01.
12
On 30th April, 2002, 355,000 people of
Jacksonville, Florida had no electricity for
hours and for almost a day for some customers.
The reason of this outage is still unclear, but a
spokesman of JEA (Jacksonville Electric
Authority) attributed this with a lightening
protection device malfunction.
13
This one is by far the biggest power outage in
the history of United States affecting around 55
million people. It was August 14th, 2003 when the
electricity of the whole northeastern USA was
knocked out for more than 7 hours. In some
places, it took almost 48 hours to fully restore
the power. This power outage is also called the
Northeast blackout of 2003.
14
The 2005 Hurricane Katrina knocked the power out
of more than 1.3 million people of Florida. The
Hurricane not only affected the state of Florida,
but it also caused power outages in others states
including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama,
Kentucky and Tennessee.
15
Approximately 4 million people in Florida faced a
blackout on February 26th, 2008 when a fire at an
electrical substation in Miami forced the whole
electrical infrastructure to shut down.
16
2 million people of Greater Houston area faced a
power outage when Hurricane Ike hit Galveston on
September 8th, 2008. The blackout lasted for up
to 6 - 16 days.
17
More than a 3.8 million people across the states
of Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
Kentucky, Metropolitan Washington, DC, and a
couple of other states faced a power outage
caused by a thunderstorm. Starting from June
29th, 2012, the blackout lasted for more than 24
hours at some places.
