  • The daily care of a loved one with Alzheimer's
can be hard at times. The way that you care for
the person will depend not only on the symptoms
that the person exhibits but also the progression
or stage of Alzheimer's that the person is in.
However, there are certain daily routines and
care habits that can help you in your role as a
    caregiver.
  • 1. It is important to understand that having a
healthy diet and regular exercise routine is
essential for those with Alzheimer's. It is good
for their overall health and will help them to
    stay focused.
  • 2. There must be structure to your day. Even the
smallest deviation can confuse and upset a person
with Alzheimer's, especially when they are in the
later stages. By doing the same daily routine,
you can help them not to become confused at the
    activities.

3
  • 4. When planning activities for the person, keep
them as simple as possible. Also, you may have to
provide cues for the person. Label drawers and
cabinets to let them know what goes in where.
This way they can do basic activities like
putting away dishes or getting a glass of water
    alone.
  • 5. You will notice as you are caring for the
person that they have better parts of the days
than others. They may have good mornings and not
so good afternoons. Plan the daily activities
around these time periods. When they are having a
not so good time, that may be a good time of the
day to rest or watch a television program,
    nothing too strenuous.

4
  • 6. Make sure that you are keeping the person from
being able to harm himself or herself. This may
involve some things. You may have to hide their
car keys or lighters and matches. You may also
have to place some bell or alarm on doors so that
you know when they are going outside. If they get
outside without your knowledge, they may wander
off before you can get to them.
  • 7. Make some time for yourself. While it may not
seem like this is a part of the person's care, it
is. Your health and well-being are just as
important. It is a stressful job, so carving out
a small time during the day just for you is
    crucial.
