4 Golden Tips for Freshers Entering the PR
Industry
Students with Public Relations (PR) as a subject
in their college curriculum are always nurtured
with the
fact that the PR industry is going to boom in the
coming years and least do they know that finding a
good job in the industry can be a frustrating
task.
Here are some tips that will help you better
understand the industry and successfully be part
of it
1. It is much more than parties and press releases
Ask the young minds seeking jobs in industry
What is Public Relations? And, there is this
general
misconception prevailing in the minds of almost
all of them that the profession is all about
planning a
party, or writing press releases, or talking to
the media.
Yes, these activities are surely part of this
profession, but they are surely not the only
things to do in a
public relations career. From digital marketing
to strategic planning skills, from understanding
the need
for true community engagement to grasping the
importance of internal communications, etc. are
some
of the skills that will help you grow in the PR
industry without much resistance.
2. Perfecting the first impression
2
If you are a fresher and looking for an
entry-level job, then make sure to make the
hiring manager take a
keen interest in you and your abilities. Starting
with the resume, you can do this by highlighting
the
proper genre (like in client/customer engagement,
risk management, customer service skills, etc.) in
which you have the best communication skills.
Instead of giving the same cut, copy paste cover
letters in every company, individualize the pitch
for
every company, highlight what you like about
them, why you feel great to be interviewed by
them and
according to what can you gain from the
organization.
Lastly, dont forget to share examples of your
work in a portfolio.
3. Start early to stay ahead
With so much competition in the market, you need
to start planning for your career in your college
days
only. The student life is the golden opportunity
dont wait for this to end and then to start
working on
your career. Instead, start attending seminars
where you can meet the professionals, try to
interact with
them and gain knowledge from them. Always
remember all are ready to help a curious student
but
nobody wishes to waste their time answering
questions of a job-seeker. A rich investment in
reading
and listening articles, speeches, blogs and
publications devoted to the industry is all you
need to grow in
this competitive PR industry.
4. Search for a good mentor
When you are sitting and interacting with the
professionals make sure to cultivate a healthy
relationship
with someone who can help you in getting into the
industry and achieving your career goals. Ask
plenty
of questions share your views and goals. This
will probably make him/ her realize your
potential which
can lead to an easy interviewing process in the
leading PR companies. Make sure to remember that a
good and humble listener is the only one people
love to help.
