Title: What is Headline Style Capitalization

1
What is headline Style Capitalization
2
  • What is headline style capitalization? When you
have already come up with the perfect and
intriguing title for your essay, article or blog
post, dont forget to format it correctly. A
headline capitalization is crucial because the
title is the first thing your audience will see.

3
  • Do you want to hook your reader? Make sure all
the headings within your paper are formatted
correctly in the same style as your title. Only
after this, your audience will find your written
piece sweet to read and visually attractive. Read
the following headline capitalization rules of 3
main styles APA, Chicago, and MLA.

4
APA Style
  • According to APA style, all of the principal
words, including the first and the last one, need
to be capitalized. Parts of speech such as verbs
(and infinitives as well), pronouns, nouns,
adverbs, and adjectives also must be capitalized.

5
  • Remember the rule you need to capitalize all
words which are more than four letters long (even
articles and prepositions which have a length of
more than 4 letters must be capitalized).

6
  • Here is a list of articles and prepositions which
you shouldnt capitalize in APA style
  • a, for, an, and, but, of, on, by, or, on, nor, in.

7
  • Remember this small prompt see what functions a
particular word has in the sentence. For
instance, when the word yet acts like an adverb
in your statement, it must be capitalized. On the
contrary, if yet is a conjunction, there is no
    need to capitalize it.

8
  • Look carefully at prepositions. If your title
includes such words as about, around, and
some other which youve written in lowercase,
Microsoft Word always highlights them as
incorrect. However, according to APA style, these
    words should be capitalized.

9
  • Pay close attention to the verb to be. Besides
the fact that all its forms (is, are, was,
were, be) are short, they are still verbs and
    you need to capitalize them.

10
Chicago Style
  • According to Chicago style, you need to
capitalize major words the first and the last
one, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, and
    adjectives.

11
  • The articles (such as a, an, the, etc.) dont
need capitalization as well as conjunctions but,
and, for, or, and nor. Use title capitalization
tool, if you have any troubles.

12
  • Lowercase prepositions. But there are some
exceptions you need to keep in mind if
    prepositions are acting adverbially or
adjectivally (for example, down in Settle Down,
on in Turn On, and so on) or when the title has
some Latin expression (A Contrario, A Priori,
    etc.).

13
  • Type as in lowercase in spite of functions it
has in the sentence. If the word to is acting
like a preposition or as a part of infinitive (to
    Go, to Regret, etc.).

14
  • If your title has a species name, for example,
Felis catus, you need to type the second part (in
our example - catus) in lowercase in spite of
whether it is the last word in the title.

15
  • Write in lowercase prefixes with some proper
names such as de, d, van, or von.
  • You can find more information on the topic in
    this Google book.

16
MLA Style
  • MLAs capitalization rules are pretty strict.
According to this style, you must capitalize the
first and the last word in your headline as well
as all major words, including verbs, nouns,
    pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives.

17
  • Also, write subordinating conjunctions (for
example, although, after, before, unless, etc.)
    in uppercase.

18
  • Parts of speech, including articles,
    prepositions, to in infinitives, coordinating
conjunctions (for, and, but, yet, so, etc.),
    write in lowercase.

19
  • If youre in doubt what part of speech a
particular word is, the best solution is to use
dictionary or grammar book. Dont forget to
    proofread paper thoroughly!
