What is Breast Cancer?
Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type
of cancer amongst women in India. This disease
rarely occurs in men. Breast cancer is the
malignant tumor (a tumor with the potential to
invade other tissues or spread to other parts of
the body) that forms in breast cells.

Breast Cancer Stages
Stage 0 Breast Cancer refers to the non-invasive
type of breast cancer Stage I Breast Cancer is
invasive breast cancer confined to the breast. In
this stage the diameter of the tumor is less than
2 cm. Stage II Breast Cancer is invasive breast
cancer where either the size of the tumor is
large or it has spread to neighboring lymph
nodes. For example - The tumor measures less
than 2 cm in diameter but has spread to lymph
nodes under the arm. - No tumor is found in the
breast, but breast cancer cells are found in
lymph nodes under the arm. - The tumor is beyond
2 cm in diameter and may or may not have spread
to lymph nodes under the arm. - The tumor is
larger than 5 cm in diameter but hasn't spread to
any lymph nodes.

Stage III Breast Cancer would not have spread
into distant body parts. Based on a number of
criteria Stage III breast cancer is subdivided
into three categories IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC.
These criteria include (but are not limited to)
the size of the tumor, the type and location of
lymph nodes affected, and the spread to tissues
near the breast. Stage IV Breast Cancer has
spread to distant parts of the body, such as the
lungs, liver, bones or brain.

Breast Cancer Treatment
Surgery Surgical Procedures used to treat breast
cancer include Lumpectomy (Partial
mastectomy) The lump/tumor or area of cancer is
removed. This surgery is performed for smaller
tumors only. Simple Mastectomy This surgery
aims to remove the entire breast tissue without
removing the axillary lymph nodes. Modified
Radical Mastectomy More common than Radical
Mastectomy, this surgery aims to remove the
entire breast tissue and lymph nodes in armpit
but chest wall muscles are spared. Radical
Mastectomy This surgery removes the muscles of
the chest wall along with the breast tissue and
lymph nodes.

Surgery Surgical Procedures used to treat breast
cancer include Radiation Therapy Radiation
therapy is a common therapy used post breast
surgery. This therapy involves using high energy
beams to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy is
typically done using a large machine that aims
the energy beams on its target - the tissues
affected by cancer (external beam radiation).
Radiation therapy can also be done by placing
radioactive material inside your body
(brachytherapy).

Surgery Surgical Procedures used to treat breast
cancer include Chemotherapy Chemotherapy uses
drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy is
used for three major purposes in the treatment
cycle If your cancer has a high risk of
returning or spreading to another part of your
body, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy to
decrease the chance that the cancer will come
back post surgery and/or radiation.(Adjuvant
chemotherapy) Chemotherapy drugs are given
before the surgery to shrink the tumor to make
the surgery easier (Neo-Adjuvant chemotherapy)
And finally its one of the main ways to kill
cancer cells that have spread to other parts of
the body.
