Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is an actual
form of winter depression some people experience.
It is normally related to how they perceive the
colder temperatures, overcast and cloudy days,
and less daylight.

Before you assume you have SAD, it is important
to consider other aspects of your life. You might
be surprised to discover why you are feeling down
is not because you have SAD. Some of the other

You have financial concerns. Your holiday
expenses may were a bit more than you originally
budgeted. Now you are worried about being able to
cover your normal living expenses. On top of
those, your credit card payments increased from
buying holiday presents on credit.

You were let go from your job. There is nothing
more devastating than to return to work after the
holidays and then get laid off a month or two
later. The first part of the year is when
companies are often looking for ways to cut
expenses, especially if they fell short on the
previous years figures.

You have become sedentary and move like a sloth.
When it is cold outside, it is very enticing to
curl up in a blanket in front of the fireplace
and just sit there for hours on end. However,
this lack of movement can start to affect our
moods. The body needs regular movement to promote
positive feelings.

You dont have to worry about joining a fitness
centre if that is not your thing. Getting up and
doing some light housekeeping or other physical
activities for about 30 minutes three or four
times a week can do wonders to get rid of our
negative moods.

Your family obligations are making you feel
overwhelmed. The kids had a nice holiday break
from school, but now things are back in full
swing. There are sporting events, music lessons,
and other extracurricular activities that need
your attention alongside your job.

You miss the sights, sounds, and smells of the
holidays. For the first part of winter, we get to
enjoy holiday decorations, lights, holiday songs,
holiday meals, and other things that make winter
fun and exciting.

But after New Years, when all the lights and
decorations come down, things can seem uneventful
and boring, which can make us feel down.

You are still eating like it is the holidays. It
is easy to let our normal eating habits go over
the holidays. However, for some people returning
to our previous diets can be challenging.

Eating excessive amounts of sweets, treats, and
gorging ourselves at meal times can leave us with
a lack of energy, which in turn can affect our
moods.
