Stye

What is a stye?
  • A stye is an infected lump that appears like a
pimple at the corner or edge of your eyelid. This
can be painful, but it is rarely a serious
    problem.

3
What is the cause of stye?
  • Styes are caused by bacteria that infect one of
the small oil glands surrounding your eyelashes.
You may be more likely to get a stye if you
    have
  • A skin problem such as acne or dandruff
  • A long term health problem such as diabetes or
    high cholesterol
  • An eye disorder like blepharitis, which is
redness and swelling of the corners of your
eyelidsA stye looks same as that to a chalazion
that is a painless lump identified in the eyelid
caused by a blocked oil gland.

4
How is stye diagnosed?
  • Your doctor would like to know about your
symptoms and activities for the further
    examination of your eyes.

5
How can someone take care of himself suffering
from stye?
  • You may need to follow a cleansing routine for
    several weeks or months
  • A washcloth with warm water should be moistened
and hold it over both eyes for several minutes.
The water and steam will help to soften any
buildup of dirt or skin cells on your eyelids. A
gentle massage can be done on your eyelids with
the washcloth to extract the buildup.
  • Few drops of baby shampoo should be added to a
cup of water and a cotton swab should be
moistened with this mixture. Using the swab,
clean all the buildup from the edges of your
eyelids and eyelashes. Use a new swab for each
eye. Do not let the swab touch your eyeball.

6
How can someone help prevent styes?
  • Keeping your eyelids and eyelashes clean can
    help.

7
What are the symptoms of stye?
  • The symptoms of stye are swelling and redness in
the area of the stye. It may also be painful,
usually when you blink or touch the stye.
Problems are not caused by stye unless it gets
    swollen.

8
How is stye treated?
  • Your doctor may want you to clean your eyelids
regularly using a warm wet washcloth. Follow your
    provider's instructions carefully.Most of the
times a stye need to be opened and drained by
your doctor for quick healing. Never attempt to
open the stye yourself. Serious infections could
spread into areas behind and around your eye.If
you are having several styes, or if styes come
back, your doctor may want you to clean your
eyelids on a regular basis. Your doctor can also
advise some antibiotic drops or ointment.
Generally a stye clears up around in a week.
