About Dr Mehta
  • Mr Jwalant S Mehta is a consultant spinal surgeon
    specialising in spinal deformity corrections and
    treatment of all spinal conditions. His is based
    in Birmingham at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital
    and the Birmingham Childrens Hospital.
    Additionally, he has practising privileges with
    the BMI and Spire groups.
  • He serves on major steering committees of the
    premier international scoliosis organisation, the
    Scoliosis Research Society. He is currently
    serving on the CME and the Research Grant review
    committees, and is a programme reviewer for the
    IMAST and the annual meetings.
  • He has recently been appointed as an honorary
    senior lecturer at the Aston University in
    Birmingham, heading the Spine module on the MCh
    (Orth) course.

What Causes Back Pain?

    activities like pushing, pulling incorrectly,
    slouching or standing for long periods, twisting,
    awkward bending etc. Arthritis, Osteoporosis,
    Bone disorders, pregnancy, kidney infections,
    sleep disorders are other specific causes of back
    pain.

How common is the back pain?
  • Back pain is one of the most common conditions
    that affect the adults of all ages. However, back
    pain in children i.e. Paediatric Back pain is not
    so common and s Spinal Surgeon has to be
    contacted before the condition worsens.
  • In case of acute back pain, the physician
    diagnoses the patients with a physical
    examination by taking the medical history of the
    patient into the account.
  • But in cases of chronic back pains, physicians
    prescribed tests and scans are done to diagnose
    the condition.
