1
How Do Whey Protein Supplements Damage the
Digestive System and How to Prevent it
  • Whey protein is the protein you get from milk, as
part of the cheese-making process. Whey protein
and casein are the two proteins of milk. These
days, the market is filled with a lot of protein
supplements and it is really tough to select the
right one. Whey protein can cause a reaction in
people who are lactose intolerant. Such people
should go for other proteins like plant-based,
soy, rice, pea, etc. Other side effects of whey
proteins are loss of appetite, bloating, stomach
upset, pain, etc. Let us look at some ways in
which whey protein supplements can affect the
    digestive system

2
  • Whey Protein Type There are three types -
    concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate. Concentrate
contains lesser amount of protein and also
includes fats and carbohydrates. Isolate contains
    more protein than concentrate. Hydrolysate
contains protein in the predigested form. If you
cant digest concentrate then you can opt for
    isolate or hydrolysate.
  • Milk vs. Water If you take the supplement with
milk, it will be more difficult to digest. Milk
contains fats, and carbs and is quite slow to
digest. Taking the supplement with water makes it
    easier to digest it.
  • Method of Consuming If you drink the shake too
fast, or all at one go, it can be a shock to your
stomach. It is always better to drink it slowly
and without swallowing much air (it can cause
    gas).

3
  • Quantity Dont believe what you read in ads or
reviews. Not everyone needs 3-4 scoops of protein
a day. If you have more protein than you actually
need, then it will be an overload on your
    digestive system.
  • Dont solely rely on supplements for your protein
needs. You can go with other sources of protein
in your diet like eggs, pulses/dal, vegetables,
nuts, dairy products, etc. Natural products are
really the best way to get any nutrients.
Supplements should only add on to that. Also, do
buy authentic products, even if they are more
expensive. The market has a lot of fake products
and they are harmful. They contain carbs, oils
and fats and things like growth hormones and
steroids. So, check for authenticity before
    buying.
