Communicate IS/IT issues to the executive group
  • The CIO communicates IS issues to the executive
    group
  • The CIO provides IS perspectives during
    discussions of IS problem solutions, proposals
    and new initiatives
  • If a business is considering a merger, then it is
    important to have the CIO there to notify if the
    information systems can be properly merged in the
    organization

Develop/enforce IS priorities within the IS
department
  • The CIO or IT leader must ensure that priorities
    are consistent with the business strategy
  • The CIO must communicate and establish the
    priorities to the IS department
  • The CIO must ensure that departments evaluate
    proposals and projects for using new technology
  • The objective of everyone in the IS department is
    to develop the appropriate systems possible for
    the organization even with money and time
    constraints

Sponsor the Steer Committee
  • The Steer Committee is the group of senior
    management
  • The CIO discusses the IS priorities and decides
    major IS projects and alternatives with the Steer
    Committee
  • The Steering Committee is a very important
    communication function between IS and the users
  • IS personnel can discuss potential IS directions
    and innovations with the user community and the
    Steering committee

Four Department Groups and Their Purposes
  • Technology Group-has deep knowledge of IT and the
    ability to envision and innovate applications for
    businesses and organizations
  • Operations Group-manages the computing
    infrastructure of computers, in-house servers,
    networks, and communication media
  • Development Group-manages the process of creating
    new information systems and maintaining existing
    systems
  • Outsourcing Relations-negotiates outsourcing
    agreements with other companies for equipment,
    applications, etc.

IS Planning Functions
  • IS exists to help businesses and organizations
    achieve their goals and objectives
  • IT is the technology products, techniques,
    procedures, and designs of computer-based
    technology
  • IT must be put in the structure within in an
    organization before IS can be used within the
    organization.
  • Technological equipment must be put in place
    before information systems can be used on the
    equipment in order for IS teams to be able to
    guide users on those information systems for the
    organization

Roles of IS Management
  • CTO (Chief Technology Officer)-head of the
    technology group
  • CIO (Chief Information Officer)-advises the
    executive group
  • CISO/CSO (Chief Information Security
    Officer/Chief Security
  • Officer)-manages the IS security program,
    protects the organizations information systems,
    and manages IS security personnel
  • Project Manager-initiates, plans, manages, and
    closes down projects
  • IT Manager-manages a team of technical workers
    and manages the implementation of new systems

Importance of the CIO
  • CIOs work with the executive committee to create
    a vision for digital transformation within the
    organization
  • CIOs build discipline across the enterprise,
    including with IT
  • Help build digital backbone for hybrid cloud
    environments
  • CIOs relentlessly deliver on operational
    efficiencies
  • CIOs focus on customer engagement
  • (McLaughlin, 2020).

Why the CIO should be Involved in the Merger
  • The CIO will know how old the computers in the
    organization are
  • The CIO can audit IT organizations before a
    merger is made to make sure it does not use old
    technology
  • The CIO manages and oversees the proper
    implementation of IS systems with his IS Team
  • The CIO has the responsibility to help the CEO
    understand the risks and requirements of
    technology
