Introduction
  • Semi-conductors are also known as chips or
    integrated circuits (ICs). They are the building
    block of all electronic devices due to their
    selective ability to conduct electric current.
    They fall in between conductors and insulators
    for their electrical conductivity. Their
    electrical conductivity is more than insulators,
    but less than conductors. Integrated circuits are
    highly popular due to their characteristics, and

  • Integrated circuits or chips are made of silicon,
    using a process known as wet processing. Due to
    its wide usage and popularity, only in 2015, the
    global revenue of semiconductors was 335
    billion. According to the Semiconductor Industry
    Association, every year the global semiconductor
    sales increase by 6.5. DC forecasts had
    indicated that by 2021, the sales increase in
    semiconductor market will increase 7.7 every
    year.

Wafer Manufacturing
  • Silicon wafers are thin, round slices produced by
    melting the semiconductor material, such as
    silicon, at a very high temperature of 1420C.
    The product of this heating is ingot a
    crystalized cylindrical block. A grinder is used
    to shape this chunk from which wafers can be
    sliced just like the loaf of bread is cut into
    slices. The sliced wafers are about 160-300 um
    thick.
  • The fabrication process of integrated circuits
    comprises of hundreds of individual steps, which
    is the reason that hundreds of wafers are made
    simultaneously. Lets take a look at the
    equipment needed to produce wafers which become
    the basis of ICs.
  • Specialized work stations are required for
    processing wafers. These work stations or units
    are known as wet chemistry benches. Specialized
    equipment is required to manufacture and produce

    series of chemicals to clean, etch, mask,
    deposit, rinse, and dry, and create wafers which

  • To ensure clean solar cells and wafers,
    specialized cleaning stations are set up.
    Installations such as sinks, faucets and spray
    guns made available. To allow spilled acids
    run-off deck surfaces are perforated. Likewise,
    filter units are installed to allow fumes
    exhaustion. In an integrated bench, there are
    built-in light and filter module. Whereas, the
    modular bench requires separate ordering of these
    components.
  • To keep a station safe from corrosive chemicals,
