Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
The rotator cuff tendonitis is a condition that
affects the tendons and muscles that help the
shoulder joint in movement, if there is
tendonitis that directly means that the tendons
are either irritated or inflamated due to certain
reasons. The rotator cuff tendonitis is also
called impingement syndrome.  The rotator cuff
tendonitis affects the shoulder joint over time.
This can occurr due to several reasons that
includes keeping the shoulder in one position for
so long, sleeping on the same shoulder side every
night, or any activities or exercise that require
lifting the arm overhead.  Usually the
tendonitis occurs in athletes who are playing
Sports that requires lifting the arm overhead,
that is why some of the conditions are referred
as -
  • Swimmers shoulder
  • Pitchers shoulder
  • Tennis shoulder

Symptoms of rotator cuff tendinitis
There are mild and severe symptoms in tendonitis,
rotator cuff tendinitis symptoms get worse over
time, initially the  mild symptoms can be
relieved by rest, but the symptoms that are
constant can become worse.
Common symptoms of rotator cuff tendinitis
  • Pain and swelling in the shoulder
  • Stiffness
  • Excessive fatigue while raising the arm overhead
  • Sudden clicking sound while raising the  arm
  • Lack of strength and loss of mobility

Diagnosis If there are any symptoms of rotator
cuff tendinitis the normal checkup will begin
examining the shoulder, the pain and tenderness
is been checked by the doctor. The doctor May
test the strength of the shoulder joint, the Neck
and the back muscles are also been examined to
observe conditions such as pinched nerve or
arthritis.

  • How is rotator cuff tendonitis treated?
  • The initial treatment begins with managing pain
and swelling that promotes healing, this is done
    by
  • Avoiding activities that cause pain
  • Avoid over using of affected shoulder
  • Applying cold pack to the shoulder
  • Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

That additional treatment that are used are
1) Physical therapy - The doctor may refer a
physical therapist that consists of stretching
and other passive exercises to restore the range
of motion and to reduce pain.
2) Medications and steroid injections -  Proper
medications are used for the management of
tendonitis if that is not being managed by
conservative treatments, doctors use steroid
injections which reduces the inflammation and
pain.
5
3) Surgery - If the non surgical treatment are
not successful then doctor recommend surgery,
this is the most effective treatment and many
people experience full recovery after rotator
cuff surgery. The most non-invasive form of
surgery is accomplished by arthroscopy, it's an
easy procedure which includes two to three small
cuts around the shoulder with almost 100 effect
and recovery.
6
Rehabilitation after rotator cuff repair
It begins usually after the first week of the
surgery. It's very important that the individual
should follow the program the surgeon recommends.
The doctor will demonstrate how to exercise and
to build strength, they will also demonstrate
some of the stretching and some minor
strengthening exercises with rubber band and
light weight, to work on the flexibility and
stabilization.
